I’m proposing a mural memorial to the boy band One DIrection who in 2015 broke off. The memorial would be located around Madison Square Garden which is the third largest venue in the world and the biggest venue they performed at. The band consisted of 5 members Harry Styles, Nial Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zane Malik, and Liam Payne. These boys were a part of every single girl’s childhood around the world. They hit a national level of popularity, with their debut single “what makes you beautiful”. In those 5 years from 2010-2015 they had such an impact on millions of teenage girls and boys. When the band broke up after being with terrible management and some suffering mental and physical tolls in their day to day lives, hearts were shattered and fans were distraught. This memorial is significant because even though the individuals of the band continued solo musical careers they will never create another song together as a band. The band ended and so did their music that was prevalent in almost every household in America and around the world. Boy Bands aren’t really a thing that reach the same national level of popularity anymore, so it’s like that genre of music died with them.
We should honor One Direction because they had a cultural importance in pop music and they paved the way for other bands by showing them how big and devoted a fandom can be to someone. Artists are always commemorated when they pass away and even though the members of one direction didn’t die, the band ended, which also means an end of an era for most one direction fans. It almost feels like someone did die. I think commemorating this band is important because of all the good things they did for charity and awareness on certain topics. Not only were they good role models but they were every teenage girl’s crush. They need to be recognized for the impact they had on people with their music.
The mural to commemorate one direction would be a painting of a photo of them hugging on stage with their fans in the background. The memorial would also include a description of the impact they had on people and the time of the band’s existence. For example, One Direction the boy band who stole hearts and mended them (2010-2015). The mural would be for fans to look at and take pictures with. It’s memorable because the individuals of the band perform in Madison Square Garden still as solo artists and they also performed together as a band there. The mural would also contain an interactive part where there would be built in buttons that play different quote, saying ,or certain lyrics that are popular from the band.
They can serve as physical reminders of significant events and can help to preserve the memory of those who were involved. Memorials can also help to shape the way that a nation understands the values that are important to it. For example, a memorial dedicated to a significant event or individual may highlight certain aspects of the event or person’s life and legacy, and may emphasize certain values or themes that are important to the nation. This can shape the way that people think about and understand the event or person, and can influence how they are remembered in the present and future. Such as the concept of a fandom shows love and respect. When you enter a concert everyone there has one thing in common and it’s that they appreciate and like an artist’s music. This creates an energy and space that’s different from anything else. It creates love and kindness.
