I think my writing in general did improve over this semester because I was exposed to three different type of essays. Throughout those three essays, I was able to develop and grow as a writer. Through the assignments and in-depth discussion of texts, I have learned to develop my argumentative and analytical skills in English class this semester. By practicing close reading and honing my writing style, I have been able to refine my critical writing abilities and create more sophisticated pieces of work.
One writing piece I was proud of was, the Analysis Essay regarding the critical disability theory. This assignment was one of my favorite because all I had to do was watch a film that resonated with me and relate it to a critical theory. Most of the time it takes me a couple of days to get all the ideas I need to write a well developed essay, but with this one I just started writing and everything fell into place. Out of all the three essays I’ve written this specific one is probably my best work. After every paragraph I would read it over and over again until I felt that the words flowed smoothly.
The argumentative writing piece was challenging for me because I didn’t know how to start it or how to incorporate my proposal into the question being asked. It took me awhile to figure out the structure of the essay because my brain was experiencing writer’s block. Finding sources was extremely hard and having to explain how it relates to the stand taken was even harder. I realized that if I didn’t force myself to understand the essay then I would never get it done. A lot of corrections needed to be done when I looked over my work and fixing the overall layout. This semester has helped expand my reading and writing skills.
