Where I’m From

I am from the bodega,

from BLT and chopped cheese.

I am from the sparkling city

I am from the Central Park

the beautiful greenery contrasting the skyline

I am from Chinese New Years

and black-hair,

from Carmen

and Alex and Tan.

I am from the family dinner

and small nightly walks.

From dragons

and demons.

I am Atheist.

Neither Christian or Buddhist.

I’m from China,

chow mein and pot stickers.

From the trip to Boston,

the trip to Virginia,

and my caring sister.

I am from China, the beautiful country where The Great Wall lies.

  1. I was able to learn a lot about you from this poem alone and loved the descriptive words you used, such as the beautiful greenery and sparkling city.
I really admire that fact that both of our parents immigrated to provide a better future for us and didn’t put their needs before ours.

  2. This poem represents New York well and gives it a very realistic description. You did a well job of including many different parts of your life in the writing in order to make it more interesting and tailored to your own childhood.
