The quote “Language is power, in ways more literal than most people think. When we speak, we exercise the power of language to transform reality. Why don’t more of us realize the connection between language and power?” by Julia Penelope is a quote I believe to be completely true. Julia Penelope was an author, philosopher, and linguist who immersed herself in lesbian and feminist issues. This was important because during the mid 1900s she attend two universities in which they both expelled her because she was a lesbian. Later on she was finally able to graduate from city college with a BA in English and Linguistics and got her Ph. D in English at the University of Texas during the late 1900s.
The quote Language is power denotes that you can speak things into action. That we can make changes to our realities or others just by simply talking. This is very meaningful to me because a lot of people don’t understand how powerful their words can be or they do know the power they have but they don’t use it for good. In our society now so many people are taking in content through social media and I truly believe that what you consume can change your reality. I’ve seen now how negatively one person can change the reality of so many people by convincing them that what they are saying is true and the only truth. Realizing the power your words hold is so important because once you change so many peoples reality/ perception of what is right morally it can heavily impact others because that reality/ perception of what is right sooner or later turns into action. Considering this people need to know the power words hold so they don’t willingly and gullibly accept what someone says without question.
I really like the way you interpreted the quote. I believe that the things we say do change our realities for the better or worse. That’s why we should always use our words for positivity. You worded everything great, and I enjoyed reading it.
I agree with the interpretation of your quote. I also love how you highlighted the way language is powerful and how we must learn how to use it well.
I enjoyed reading your post. The way you described words as embodiments of power and symbols of importance was impressive
