Where I’m From

I am from untouchable chinas,

from fancy plates and special occasion spoons

I am from the sound of quietness on weekdays to stomps and shuffling on weekends

I am from the Hibiscus

the large flower in different color with stigma sprouting out

I am from Pumpkin soup on January 1st

and never apologizing to each other

from Esther

and Nana and shelove

I am from the oversharers

and gossip

From she’s such a cute baby

and keep out of trouble

I am from going to church when only necessary

On New Year’s Eve to occasional pop ups throughout the months.

I’m from Haiti and immigrant parents,

Fried plantains and rice

From the time when we would go out without permission and worry our parents,

the times we would scare Nana that we would leave without her,

and the time Tani would make excuses for every little thing.

I am from albums tucked away in boxes that will never be open unless thought about or reconciliation of them are brought to the minds of others.

  1. I can relate on many things such as the fancy plates saved up for special occasions, never apologizing to each other and albums. It’s interesting that even though we are from different places, we have some things in common.

  2. I can totally relate with going to church only when necessary, and the oversharing/gossip. I loved your hibiscus line and I’m interested in your tradition of eating pumpkin soup on January first.
