Victor Hugo, a poet and famous French writer, once wrote, “ He who opens a school door, closes a prison.” Victor’s quote really spoke out to me because it reminded me of something I learned in high school. My teacher taught us that a father must teach their child a skill, or education, in order for the child to have an ability to make money without stealing and doing evil. This is how I understood the amazing quote by Victor Hugo, by receiving an education you keep yourself from doing evil and ending up in prison.
Surprisingly Victor Hugo, who wrote a quote explaining education keeps you out of trouble, ended up going into exile for denouncing Napoleon III. Hugo was a very kind hearted man who was always trying to help the poor. Hugo spoke out and shed light on the poor conditions of the impoverished living in France. He also spoke out against the death penalty stating it was crude and uncivilized. He would always speak his mind and even helped get rid of the death penalty in countries like Portugal, Colombia, and Genev.

I personally loved the way you interpreted this quote. I wouldn’t have been able to think about this quote the way that you did, and it allowed me to view it in a whole different way. The way you connected the quote to the fact that a father must someway and somehow teach their child certain things in order to keep them out of trouble and doing “evil” things is a beautiful way of intertwining the idea of education and being a good person. Education does not always have to exist in the classroom, and this is the perfect example of that.
Wow, i really enjoyed the example and explanation you gave as to why this quote hit home in a personal sense to you. I truly do believe as well as you that the quote depicts the idea of making keeping one’s hands clean or out of trouble by getting an education as the substituting factor.
The way you interpreted the quote was very sophisticated and I agree with your analysis. I also enjoyed reading about Victor. He seems like he was a interesting person with some good values and outlooks on life.
I enjoyed your insight on this quote as I chose the same one but took a different approach. I had no idea that Hugo went into exile! Your thoughts are detailed and sophisticated.
