Syllabus Assignment

“He who opens a school door, closes a prison”. The importance in education and the impact it leaves on the children is something too grave to go overlooked. A Child’s education is very important to build a structure of responsibility and intellect. Victor Hugo, a French Romantic writer and politician who published a large array of genre of his 60 year career was the man who said this quote was a man who valued education and viewed it as the gateway to a better future. In Victor Hugo’s novel “Les Miserables” he writes about how society treats the lower class, he goes into the importance of education in this novel and describes how being uneducated will leave you stuck in life.

The “prison” Victor Hugo is referring too can be a mental or a physical prison. The mental prison refers to being ignorant and uneducated. The lack of education takes you on the path on ignorance, leaving you blind to opportunities. Education is the most important trait you can have and is the key to getting anywhere in life. The physical prison is where you are more likely to end up as an uneducated person. Uneducated people are more prone to committing crimes considering they are most likely less fortunate. NYC is a place where a kid can become independent and can fall into the wrong crowd if not careful. Those who choose to dropout of school or not take their education seriously often turn to the wrong crowd. Growing up with the wrong crowd in the most crucial part of your life can leave you with an unstable foundation and an unsuccessful future. Seeing peers choose to take the alternative route rather then education gave me real world scenario of the quote and how the “prison” can be a mental block as well.
