“The impact of Covid-19, a million deaths in…”

The article I chose was titled, “The impact of Covid-19, a million deaths in…”, and it discussed the issue of poor treatment black people are enduring from U.S health care systems. The podcast talked about examples of how this mistreatment, or lack of treatment, manifested itself during the covid-19 pandemic (in recent times), during a pregnancy, and the hospitalization of a man with lung issues (the father of the podcast’s guest speaker). The guest speaker of the podcast explained how in these situations, black people had been dismissed when expressing concerning symptoms regarding their health, and suffered the effects of misconceptions about black people, in the healthcare field.

The guest speaker on the podcast was Linda Villarosa, an award-winning health and science reporter. Linda supported the idea that black people were subject to inadequate health care. She appeared to present the issue fairly, since she referred to specific situations and statistics after making a point. My viewpoint on this topic wasn’t called into question when listening to this podcast, although doing so helped further educate me on this issue. I believe that all people are entitled to good health care and it is critical to address any racial bias and income inequality preventing this from happening. I think that the “anti-racism training” for health care providers is a step in the right direction, as well as the awareness and activism that has come with this new generation.

  1. I would have to agree with the idea that our health care systems during the time covid-19 was horrid but I wouldn’t have said it was a racial dilemma as covid 19 affected a lot of people. Generalizing that it was mostly black people takes away the struggle to others whom probably faced the same as them and are not spotlighted due to them not being of color.

  2. I also agree that the higher up officials definitely acted way to late in the containing of Covid 19. I believe that if they had acted a bit faster and realized how much of a threat the virus would have been then there wouldn’t have been so many loses. I feel like the health care system tried the best they can in stopping the spread but ultimately fell short.
