Is it time to say R.I.P to P.O.C

The article “is it time to say R.I.P to P.O.C” revolves around the topic of minorities and how we classify/group them. It goes on to talk about how P.O.C (people of color) is slowly deteriorating as we look upon our past. When we talk about past we are talking about the different ethnic groups people and how they were oppressed. They talk about how in involving these past oppressed, the word/phrase P.O.C should be changed and should be B.I.P.O.C (black and indigenous people of color). Though it conflicts with the topic of minorities as only in the U.S. is white people not considered a minority but on the worldwide scale they are classified as minorities. So we cant just generalize the word minority for one country it’d have to world wide. They also talk about how minorities are more willing to help out other minorities because they can relate in some way in their struggles. This was to be proven based on an experiment in which a man conducted where minorities who supported BLM were more likely to support DACA and Anti-Chinese hate crimes.

My thoughts on this is really quite plain out simple, why even bother to acknowledge what we once were; minorities. We have come a long way from the past and to say we are minorities is completely insane even after knowing how much foreign nations have immigrated from the country to make the united states as diverse as it is today. In todays society, I am more likely to encounter a person who is not of European decent than someone of color. This is from my experience others may oppose this idea’s as we all live in different neighborhoods. Although I want you to think how many friends do you have that are of European descent, not those who appear white but are from foreign countries. Im pretty sure you would be looking at a lower number compared to those you know who are of color. This phrase P.O.C is quite irrelevant in todays society, in my eyes because in the end what does this phrase really mean to you? do you feel represented ? cause I sure don’t and don’t have a care if I am or not as I know us foreigners have made the U.S. more diverse and that is really all we need to know, that diversity in the U.S. is what represents us not a word a phrase but us being a part of the U.S.

  1. I find your opinionated response to the article both amusing and agreeable. I don’t feel that POC is really such a relevant term in today’s society. I don’t even find the word ‘minority’ as of much relevance today because the world is too interconnected. Sometimes I really struggle to understand how today’s society, especially in the US, has such a hard time wrapping their heads around the concept that race is a man-made concept and it does not biologically impact any of us or the abilities that we have. I find that whether we are called the minority or the majority, the matter of fact is we lack, as a collective, both financial and political power; Who cares what the word of representation is when it has nothing to do with the problem at the core?
