Day 1 (September 13, 2022) –
Whew! Today was a long day. When I got home as usual my mother asked me how my day was. I told her formally what happened with respect. The my brother asked me how my day was and it described it in two words,” Dumb tiring”. When me and my brothers speak we like to talk like New Yorkers. Lol. If I ever speak to my mother in our lango then she wouldn’t understand it and would probably think we are speaking to her disrespectfully.
Day 2 (September 14,2022) –
The time I code switched was when I was talking on the phone with my friends. When I was on the phone with them having a conversion we have secret codes to understand each other and others around me not knowing what we are talking about. This is how we communicate 99% of the time because I know there are always listening ears around.
Day 3 (September 15,2022) –
Today was the day where I felt happy because there were so many activities going on around the school during club hours. I was being loud and being myself. I was enjoying myself to the fullest. But having fun didn’t last too long because after that I went to the library to get some work done. I had to stay quiet in the environment to respect others’ study times.
Day 4(September 16, 2022)–
Today was the day I went to work and I worked with customers. When I was speaking with the customer, I was making them feel welcomed and making myself approachable. I was speaking to them with respect. When I code switched when I was conversing with friends outside of work but in a joking and disrespectful manner. This is how our friendship is and the way we talk to each other.
Day 5 (September 17,2022)–
The way I code switched today was by acting a certain way in a certain setting. Today at work I was acting mature, being respectful around my co-workers and not really talking as much. Then at home it was the complete opposite. I was talking a lot and being loud. I feel like I was being my true self.
Day 6 (September 18, 2022)–
When I was texting today it was completely different from each other. When I texted my friends today, I was texting with different slang words . But with parents I texted them professionally to be respectful.
Day 7 (September 18,2022)–
I spoke to my grandmother today in my native language because she doesn’t understand English.
I relate with you speaking like a New Yorker since I also tend to do that when I’m around friends. I also find myself code switching in scenarios just like you would to fit into the atmosphere.
I agree, born and raised New Yorkers usually have a different way of talking than others have. There is always a joke saying ‘oh the way you speak screams new york’. Nevertheless, I also found it very funny how you said that there are ears everywhere because my family is the same way.
Your example of code-switch on Day 2 is really relatable. It reminds me of the secret code I share with my friends in large social settings. These are the more subtle examples that is hard for me to point out. Thank you for sharing that.
