MEDIA ANALYSIS- Auburn and Ivory

Auburn and Ivory is a song by Beach House- a band comprised of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally. This song utilizes vague symbolism that can be open to several interpretations including reflecting on one’s younger self, marriage, and virginity. The ‘ivory’ can represent a wedding dress as well as pureness/innocence, ‘auburn’ the hair of a woman. Additionally, ponytails, mentioned several times, carry a recognized child-like connotation. Lastly, the song may be construed as a woman getting married, reflecting upon the freedom she gave up. This is further explored in the line, “wanting her one sacrifice”, sacrifice being widely known reference to virginity. It’s hard to know for certain as Legrand and Scally are reserved individuals, and leave most, if not all, of the interpretation to the listener. The song, carrying an eerie aura which some may even call unsettling, coupled with the mystery behind it may leave the audience melancholy. It’s definitely worth a listen.
