Assignments – Week #14

I hope everyone had a peaceful and restorative Spring Break and that you are returning to school energized and focused, ready to complete the semester on a high note.

  • Analytical Research Papers – Most of you have already received comments back from me on your research papers. Please read the comments carefully, and see me if you have any questions or want to go over any part of the paper. If I have NOT received your paper yet, please keep in mind that it is your responsibility to get in touch with me to discuss your situation, so reach out!
  • Field Trip – On Monday, May 6th, we will be visiting the Union Square Greenmarket. We will meet in our regular classroom and walk there together. We will not be returning to the classroom that day, so plan accordingly.
  • Creative Re-Mix – On Monday, May 13th and Wednesday, May 15th, you will be presenting your Creative Re-Mix to the class. Hopefully, you settled on an idea before Spring Break and have either made some progress or have given some thought to your plan. In a comment on this blog post, please share your plan for the Creative Re-Mix. If you are still struggling to settle on a plan, provide two possibilities of projects you might pursue. The sooner you post your idea, the sooner you will get feedback. Please share your Creative Remix idea no later that this Friday, May 3rd.

  1. My plan for the Creative Re-Mix is to have an interview with my sister talking about her experience in Morocco. I will ask her questions about it and also have another family member incldued.

  2. I will create a slide show comparing school lunches across different countries

    • JSylvor says:

Alex – Since this is material that is readily available online, I am wondering where the creativity would come in. I’m not seeing much of a project here yet – since it would only take a few minutes to locate pictures of school lunches around the world. How can you develop a truly creative project that connects to your research subject?

  3. ZIHAO CHEN says:

I will make a slideshow showing what food I’d eat to avoid sugar.

    • JSylvor says:

Z, I am not seeing where the creativity and effort would come in here. It would only take a few minutes to assemble photos online of foods that are low in sugar. This actually doesn’t sound like a particularly meaningful project yet. How can you develop an idea that would actually require you to CREATE something?

  4. I’ll probably make a slideshow of Italian food.

    • JSylvor says:

This is not a creative remix. It would take a few minutes to grab pictures of Italian food off the internet. Your task here is to come up with a CREATIVE project that would actually require careful thought, effort, and creativity on your part. Please come up with a proposal that meets the project requirements.

  5. KEVIN GARCIA says:

Slideshow on experiment of my family observing what they threw out and figuring out why did they throw it out.

    • JSylvor says:

Kevin – This sounds interesting. I like the idea of conducting an at-home experiment. Make sure that you start the experiment early, so that you have enough time to collect meaningful data and then to consider the implications of the data.

  6. Steven Ma says:

I would film a video of my mom making eggs and tomatoes, then i would film my sister having the eggs and tomatoes ( a food review ). I might also film my self making the egg and tomatoes after my mom to let my sister try out both.

    • JSylvor says:

Steven, Ok. Think about what would make this a meaningful project. What would be the “idea” of the project? For viewers to learn how to make this recipe? For you and/or your sister to learn how to make the dish the way your mother does? I kind of like the idea of you and your mother both making the dish, then having your sister do a “blind” taste test to compare the two.

  7. I will make a vlog of me trying Carlitos food truck once again and sharing the experience.

    • JSylvor says:

Ok. Think ahead about what kinds of questions you might want to ask him and what shape you want the “vlog” to take. Is it about him and his business? Is it about the food? Is it about the community that gathers there? Do some prep work before you go, so that you know what you want to capture.

  8. KEVIN XU says:

Trying asain food truck near school with freinds and vlog the experince

    • JSylvor says:

Kevin, Think ahead about what you want to capture and what the “point” of the video is. Is it just to capture you and your friends eating lunch? Do you want to learn anything about this business? Is this a video that you would share online ? An if so, what would its purpose be?
