Persepolis

While watching the film I’ve come up with these questions.

1.) most of the film was black and white, giving us sort of an idea of a every plain a predictable setting but why is it that many unsuspecting things occurred? did she leave her parents too young?
2.) which perception of her 2nd boyfriend was real? The one when she was in love, or when after she caught him cheating? In both perceptions her view on this guy is clouded by her emotions. So which is the real one?
3.) After the doctor diagnosed her as depressed, she became depressed. What made her depressed?. She wasn’t depressed when she was diagnosed even though she didn’t know that. Was it that she accepted what the doctor said and fell into depression, or did she become depressed because of the medicine? Medicine has a way of fixing one thing while attacking another, since she wasn’t really depressed, did it make her depressed?

Persepolis

Some few questions I was able to come regarding the movie “Persepolis” are:

  1. What was Satrapi’s reasoning for starting the movie from when she was a young girl with the scenes being in black and white and would take a glimpse of her present life that would be represented in color but why not from present to past and the colors being reverse?
  2. A confusion that I had is I understood the people of Tehran Marjane’s family were against the king and their passion was in social activism. However, was that the same for Marjane, would her interest in western culture be a factor of influence of that?
  3. Uncle Anoosh was married but appears to dislike his wife but never said why? what was he hiding about his relationship?

Persepolis

  1. Satrapi left the second time to gain her freedom in another country. Why didn’t her parents come along with her to gain their freedom as well?
  2. Women in Iran usually wore a scarf, a dress and trousers while the men wore anything. After a certain point the women had to start wearing longer scarfs and bigger trousers because the men were still being able to perceive what they had on. Whose fault is this?
  3. Even after gaining her freedom, why was Satrapi so miserable?

Persepolis

  1.  I noticed that Marjane showed interest in being rebellious, which seems to explain her taste in punk music and her interests in western influences. Id like to ask if whether or not  these traits would be considered more helpful or harmful in helping Marjane get through life during the war?
  2. In the film, Marjane was constantly moving away from her home in Iran to get away from the war. In doing so, she had to leave her life behind and her family and friends as well in order to get a fresh start in life. During the war, she moved to vienna. Although she returned to Tehran after the war , she ended up moving away again to paris. My question  is if whether or not Tehran would be considered her “real”  home since it was not where she permanently resided within the film?
  3. Im not sure if this was addressed in class, but I’m curious on whether or not this film is allowed, or if there was ever a time when it wasn’t allowed to be shown in Iran , since the film does address/ challenge the government in Tehran ?

Persepolis

  1. I noticed that the schools changed the way that they taught before, during, and after the revolution, is Persepolis trying to show that certain levels of education brainwash the students into believing what the government wants them to believe?
  2. In Persepolis, Satrapi’s uncle was in the hospital and her aunt said that the head direct of the hospital was her old window washer,  how can someone go from being bossed around to bossing people around and having such a superior job than his other one?
  3. Even though Satrapi “gained” her freedom, why did she look so miserable? Is it because she had to leave her family behind?

Persepolis

  1. How did she hear of Western music groups if they weren’t allowed in Iran?
  2. How were her and her two female friends able to be in public by themselves? I thought women could only be in public with either their husband or a male figure in their lives like their fathers.
  3. Why was it titled “Persepolis”?

Persepolis Questions

  1. What was the significance of the bread swans given to Marjane by her Uncle?
  2. I understand it included an emphasis and knowledge on the crisis situations in Iran, but what (if so) was her central message?
  3. I have a implication, but why did she use different color effects throughout the novel instead of sticking to one?

Persepolis – A Message about the Homework

As planned, I scanned an excerpt from Persepolis and was intending to post it here for you to read in preparation for Wednesday’s class.  Unfortunately, because I did a high resolution scan to preserve the integrity of Satrapi’s drawings, the file I created is quite large and can’t be posted to this blog or sent as an attachment to an email.  I spent hours trying to find a way around this (creating a zip-file, etc…), but can’t make it work, so I will be bringing xeroxes for you to Wednesday’s class.  Sorry for any confusion this causes.

Remember – you are still expected to post three questions about the film on the blog.  I see that Rafael has already posted three great questions; now let’s hear from the rest of you.

Have a great day!  I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts about Persepolis tomorrow!

Persepolis

The questions that i could think of regarding the film were:

1.) I noticed that as Marjane was explaining her life story it was in black and white then once it was the present it would change to color. What was the author’s idea when applying this style of color throughout the film?

2.) As Marjane was getting back on her feet after her first relationship ended badly, she said she needed to learn everything possible about western culture. Why did she need to know rather than her wanting to know? Since when she was a teenager, she wanted to listen to these western artist groups. She did not need to listen to them.

3.) I was confused under what circumstances caused policies, against the way women dressed in Iran and how they acted with their significant other, to increase dramatically rather than during Marjane’s father lifetime when the policy was not as strict?

Essay Brainstorm (Quinn Jones)

#1 To describe a time in which i was displaced i’d use my younger self being placed in foster care with my grandparents from living with my mom.
#2 A leave taking that i have taken that i can write about would have to be when i had to transition from highschool to college, and the many friends i left behind.
#4 I found this interesting because after a while i began to not notice the different language i use because i feel like i began to merge them, and so i found it interesting that these people had different ways of speaking outside of home and at home.
