ENG 2100: Writing 1 with Jay Thompson

Ibrahim Rauf, Business Analysis, Blog Post

A business in my neighborhood is the icee stand at the corner of the high school. This business is a very productive business because whenever high schoolers come out of school on warm or hot days, they want something cold to eat. Not only is the icee’s cheap, but they are very delightful to the taste. The icees come in different flavors such as coco, mango, cherry, lime and rainbow. They also come in different sizes, a $1.50, $2.00, $4.00 and $5.00 size. When someone gets an icee, they have the choice two either get one flavor or two flavors at the same time. The icee’s are a very sweet and addicting to eat. They definitely are a good way to cool off on warmer days.

As a Spanish major, it would be good for me to be bilingual so I can attract more customers to buy the icee’s I am selling. This would give me more profit and customers buying my product. As a philosophy major, I would need to think critically as to how I can make more profit off of my business based on the people around. Since the business is outside a high school, I would show up around the time that kids get out of school and use some type of sound to gain their attention. As a mathematics major, I can calculate my revenue based off previous days of business and how much I spend on buying the product.

The three majors I used were philosophy, Spanish, and mathematics. What I learned after writing this short analysis is how analytical a person can get describing anything, I have learned this throughout the process of analysis. But what gives this assignment a further perception is how different views can change the analogy of the thing you are analyzing.

1.The method has helped me in writing a claim or an argument. The organization of Hengelo will ultimately benefit from the analysis aspect. Hengelo starts with a macro question and continues to answer the macro question with micro questions throughout the essay. Meaning start by writing your point in his piece, and that point is answered repeatedly All over Again.

2. Abdulrahim answers the questions Hengelo asks by summarizing the atmosphere presented to him in the concert by Carly Rae Jepsen He analyzes how specific norms become irrelevant in the concert he attended, with Jepsen’s album highlighting the carelessness of people. He explains that there is shame in public relating someone. He points out that Jepson’s  music racializes on the crowd,.He also explains his future and how he relates to his personal problems with his complex music style and how it has an impact on him. It even distracted him from the real world for a moment as well.

Ibrahim Rauf, Week 8, Blog Post

In my house there is a large printer. This black colored printer is sitting on the chaster inside the room I share with two of my siblings. The printer is manufactured by HP and was very tech filled for when we bought it. The printer has a screen and can take pictures of whatever paper you want to copy instead of scanning it. We have been using this printer for the past 8 years or so. The colored ink for this printer is very specific, making it expensive. On this printer sits a lot of papers that are already printed out, from documents to homework assignments.

The printer has been used for a very long time. It has been a helpful item during my middle and high school years for both my siblings and I. The printers screen works in a very funky way. You have to press the screen at a harder level than what you usually press your phone at, but everything works functionally. The printer also prints at a very fast pace. Usually printers take a minute to print items, but this printer instantly gives you whatever you wanted to print. But there is a downside that can get very annoying at times. Since the printer is wireless, sometimes it disconnects with the WiFi and becomes very difficult to reconnect. But overall, the printer we have is one of the most useful things in the house.

One thing that surprised be about writing this blog post is how analytical you can get about such simple items around you, its really cool. I believe the hardest part was starting off with what exactly to say about the printer, but once I figured that out, there was an easy flow of what to say.

Ibrahim Rauf, week 7, Blog Writing

In my neighborhood, there is a park right outside my house. This park stretches 2 miles and is full of greenery for the people residing along the park. The park is a place for all of the children to come hangout and play with their friends, or for some people to run along for exercise. This park attracts a lot of different types of people, from young to old all around the community. For some this park is a place to relax and catch a breath of fresh air. There are a plenty amount of trees with many types of wildlife running around such as birds and squirrels. This park brings a feeling of refreshment to an already highly polluted city. The park is also a childhood place for me and my siblings where we used to go play together.

I added a sentence explaining the types of people in the park. I also added another sentence explaining the different wildlife in the park. The reason I added these two sentences is because I was inspired by the reading to add more detail because it is what makes an analysis better.

Ibrahim Rauf, Week 5, Reading Response

  1. Ethos: An example of ethos in my literacy narrative is, ” My mother, who moved with my father from Pakistan, gave birth to me in the Bronx. Being the only male child in a family of 5, I was forced to grow with a lot of responsibilities around me. With a father who was out all day working and a mother who was only home to take care of me and two of my sisters, the expectations were high.” I believe this is an example of ethos because it entrusts the reader that I bounce backed from a difficult minority background.

Pathos: An example of pathos in my literacy narrative is, ” The definition of “feeling lonely” was something I could not relate to. Grades being higher than ever and becoming the most popular student around, life for me was going great. But there was always a feeling of emptiness that was inside me that I could not explain.” I believe this is an example of pathos because it describes how I felt a pity of emptiness through my journey, which is attaching a feeling to those people who can express themselves due to the judgements of other people.

Logos: An example of logos in my literacy narrative is, ” What I have learned from Islam is that it is not that religion changes your life, but it changes you to stand up against the difficulties that life throws at you more efficiently. Islam taught me to realize that I am not perfect as a human and that my value lies in how much effort I put into doing the right things. Ever since I adapted this faith into my life, I have improved myself mentally, physically, and spiritually.” I believe this is an example of pathos because it gives the viewer a result of how coming to my faith made me a better human being.

2. In the movie The Lion King, one of the most heartbreaking scenes that occurred in the movie was when the king of the animals, Mufasa, was thrown off the edge of a cliff into a stampede of wildebeest by none other than Scar, his own brother. To top it all off, Simba, the cub son of Mufasa, watched his father fall to his death. The intentions behind why Scar killed his brother was because he was simply jealous that he was not given any value in the kingdom, and he wanted to be the ruler. Scar lured Simba into a canyon and told a few of his hyena friends to cause a stampede in the direction of the canyon. From they’re Scar rushed to Mufasa and told him that Simba was stuck in a wildebeest stampede, causing Mufasa to go rescue his son. Mufasa risked his life and jumped straight into the stampede, and found his son hanging onto a small tree branch. After catching Simba right as he let go of the branch, Mufasa climbs the side of the canyon and gets his son to safety. But right as he did so, Mufasa got caught into the stampede himself, but jumped out of it and started climbing the wall of the canyon. Right as he reached the top, Scar watched his brother struggle up, and when he asked for help, he grabbed his paws and threw his brother into the canyon, causing Mufasa to fall to his death and his son there to witness it.

3.What I noticed about this analysis activity was how much detail you need to use to make the reader feel the scene you are describing. Imagery and description seem to be the strongest elements of an analysis. Another thing I noticed while doing this activity was how descriptive detail can really catch the audiences eye and make them feel like they were apart of the scene. Overall I also better learned how important detail is in an analysis.

Ibrahim Rauf, Literacy Narrative scene

Through my first three years of high school, I lived a life where even though I was seen as a leader among students and friends, I was also a follower of society’s norms. This just proves that no matter what position of power you have in society, you will always be a pet to the norms. As time passed in high school, I was very bond to my social life, always being around a group of people all the time was very normal to me. The definition of “feeling lonely” was something I couldn’t relate to. Grades being higher than ever and becoming arguably the most popular student around, life for me was going great. But there was always a feeling of emptiness that was inside me that I could not explain. Nonetheless, I would find myself not paying attention to this and kept living the life I lived. When it came to faith, I would mostly hide the life I was currently living from my family, and whenever I was around family, I was the person they liked me to be. Living a two-sided life, I soon found out was not the life I wanted. I was hiding who I was in society from my family and hiding who I was in my family from society.

Ibrahim Rauf, Week 4, Reading responses

  1. A descriptive detail that stood out to me from Malcolm X’s narrative was how he described that reading as something that brought liberation to a person. X talks about how reading had been a key to liberating him from the tortures of the world, such as how he explained that even in jail the world around him was blocked out whenever he picked up a book. He described the matter as being completely free, which is ironic since he was locked up in jail at the time. This reflects a lot about how reading can take you to a different dimension of feeling relief. This description from Malcolm X also displays how knowledge-hungry he was.

2. One style that I would like to imitate from all the writers that we have read about is how detailed and elaborate they can get. The reason being is because when a writer is detailed and explains the detail to the audience, it can captivate a reader’s attention and want them to keep reading forward. One of the styles that captivated my attention was how Anzaldua’s literacy narrative used two languages. Using two languages, allowed her to further grasp the audience she was targeted because not only could they relate to her narrative, but on top of her using Spanish in the narrative, it allowed readers to further relate with her experiences. I can implement this into my literacy narrative by throwing in religious phrases or words in my literacy narrative to further captivate the attention of the audience I’m trying to get to.

Ibrahim Rauf, Week 4, Reading Responses

1.Anxiety and aversion have been barriers to my writing in the past because I concentrated how much time there is and undermining my literary skill. I would lose a lot of confidence based on how strong I was at the topic. One way that I plan to adopt Eickmeyer‘s skills and strategies in writing my literacy story is by breaking down the assignment. If I break a large task into smaller tasks, it becomes more manageable. Brainstorming and pre-writing your piece will also reduce the stress of writing.

2.Two worlds I exist in between are the world of being successful, and the world of fear. The reason behind this is that I have a lot of motivation and determination to become prosperous among my family and to live a calm life in the future. But what contradicts this is my feeling of fear, which is due to not believing that I’m good enough to be up for the task. This causes me to be very hesitant in achieving my goals and plans for the life ahead of me. But when the fear fades away, nothing but destiny stands in the way of what my goals are.

Ibrahim Rauf, Week 3, Reading Responses

1.Gloria Anzalda does not agree with the idea of firm lines between different languages and people that speak different languages. The line “Chicano Spanish is not incorrect, it is a living language” demonstrates that The goal of language is to communicate and connect with one another, and this line demonstrates that. She shows that even if she speaks different languages, she can still communicate in different languages.

2.I believe Anzaldua’s style and feature in her literacy story is with a purpose, like I think after reading her story she felt that the language barriers are frustrating. And later, she gives an example of how to overcome it and make herself proud of her heritage and culture. “Humildes yet proud, quietos yet wild… Stubborn, persevering, impene-trable as stone, yet possessing a malleability that renders us unbreakable, we, the mestizas and mestizos, will remain.” This is to encourage people to feel this way to raise people’s compassion and sympathy.

3.Liao’s conviction is best portrayed in Sedaris essay. In both the literacy narratives it starts with them learning new languages to eventually know those languages. On the contrary, Liao’s  literacy narrative convention of change does not appear in Sedaris’ essay. Even though sedaris is able to understand French at closing of the essay, the changes are not mentioned in the essays that led Sedaris towards more knowledge and a better understanding of the French language.

4.I don’t believe that she felt the same way at the end of the essay. Mansion describes silent as a tool for speaking when it is unpraegnable, but she doesn’t always use it because she needs to talk to friends and family. At the very end of the essay, she fell silent again sat down and cried, and believed that things were unclear, but she had clearly changed the tone of writing.
