In my opinion, Hengel’s method is less useful then the exhaustive documentation that we have been doing in class. Although, using Hengl’s method, it allows you to create a claim before fully analyzing the text, which will show your first impression on it. While using exhaustive documentation, it allows you to create a finalized claim that you know is correct. Hengel’s method may appear harder because you are not fully analyzing what you are writing a claim about before you write it.
Abdurraqib answered Hengel’s questions, “What do you see? What do you make of it? Why does it matter?”, perfectly. For the first question, Abdurraqib talked about how he went to Carly Rae Jepsen’s show and how it was somewhat depressing. What he made of it was that Carly’s songs were trying to “unlock a hard door of sadness”. This matters because she was trying to make the people set aside their sadness and experience joy for one night of her show.
Nick, I wonder what’s an aspect of your subject that you discovered only in the process of doing exhaustive documentation? (I’m interested in what methods or techniques you’ll be taking away from this project to future writing.)
