ENG 2100: Writing 1 with Jay Thompson

Gabrielle Nolan one scene from analysis

When you first listen to a song, the initial lens you use is your ears. You usually listen to the beat of the song and if you like the way the song goes or makes you feel, you may save it to your playlist or replay it. Some people even go as far to listen to some of the artist’s other music and see if they like it as well. However, many people may listen to the lyrics but not understand what they are saying. Some songs even have a darker meaning to them but are disguised with an upbeat rhythm. The song that comes to mind when talking about deeply analysing something, is ‘Pumped up Kicks’ by Foster the People. This song was released in September of 2010 and is categorized as indie pop, running approximately four minutes long. The song quickly climbed the charts and became very popular. Why wouldn’t it? It’s an upbeat song and fun to sing along to. Unfortunately the song’s catchy lyrics are a lot darker than they appear “you better run better run, out run my gun”. The song seems to be talking about someone shooting people using a gun.
