ENG 2100: Writing 1 with Jay Thompson

Nishmitha Rodrigo Reading Response 10/27

  • Asian individuals and communities are constantly discriminated in America due to them being stereotyped.
  • The American film industry makes profit by exploiting the stereotypes of Asians.
  • Asians beliefs and values are disrespected in the media industry because in these Asian based movies and TV shows, more of American values show up rather than Asian values.
  1. This is a very controversial issues just like every other race, Asians has been in the United States for a very long time and has made many contributions to society. So therefore, it’s wrong to treat them in this manner because making all Asian seem a specific way due to stereotypes is extremely disrespectful to them as people and their cultures.
  2. I feel that Chau’s most persuasive arguments if when he spoke about Chinese people being stereotyped as illiterate on page 132. By this, Chau was basically saying that Asian, specifically Chinese people, are constantly being judged by Americans. But then after, they were being judged because they worked too hard. This just goes to show that no matter what they did, they were always being stereotyped by some degree.
  3. An argument I can imagine for the other side is that anything that American’s don’t understand or isn’t familiar with instantly becomes a threat to their own values, so they try and undermine others values to feel good about their own. Sometimes they even try to steal or adapt some of these value into their own culture after stereotyping them. An example of this is the Asian eyes that people used to make fun of a couple years ago. However, now it has become a trend and people actually go out of their way to imitate their eye look with makeup or surgery, in extreme cases, to get those Asian eyes.
  4. The gap that I discovered in my knowledge as I read this article and answered these questions is that Asian hate and discrimination is fueled by the entertainment industry. They do this through subliminally stereotyping Asians in the movies, where it’s not stated out in the open but little events or phrases they say sticks in the back of the viewers mind. Overall, I feel that a lot of the Asian discrimination is fueled by the Media industry.
