Gallo’s argument was that the state of being watched increases societal norms in people. These “societal norms” are how we behave, follow rules, and what we value. The evidence to support this is that being watched applies pressure on people to act accordingly. In Terry V. Ohio, probable cause was disregarded which increased unlawful watching and searching of people. Law and order became a priority over the rights of African Americans in this instance. This is where this topic becomes controversial because it violates the privacy rights of people. However, from a positive standpoint, being watched can help protect people. For example, the location of a hug can be deemed if it is appropriate or inappropriate. If you were to hug a child in front of their parents, while being watched, it’s not inappropriate. Having said that, touching a child in private can be inappropriate.

  • “Surveillance and conformity in competitive youth swimming” by Melanie Lang.

After viewing this in the Newman Library myself, I believe this article was used to support their argument. Although I was looking for something that had to deal with surveillance in terms of technology, this example helped me understand surveillance with the naked eye in a new light. The example of touching a child in private vs in public can show the appropriateness of the situation. I think the author quoted them fairly as I got the same message from both passages.

“The Spirit of 1968: Toward Abolishing Terry Doctrine” by Frank Rudy Cooper. Once I went to the Newman Library and read this article, I knew the author, Gallo, used this to support their argument. However, to me it was confusing. The issue that is most prominent is a civil rights issue over race. This article does not necessarily directly support the argument of surveillance increasing societal norms. Therefore, this complicates their argument.
