2. After reading Gallo’s argument you learn about two different sides to surveillance. On one hand, it can be very beneficial but on the other, it can be very harmful. She mentions ideas that hint at surveillance sort of being a form of “brainwashing”. When people know they are under surveillance they act differently than what other first thought would be. She mentions how surveillance is used to help maintain behavioral codes in many places sort of regulating the way people act. Surveillance can also be a massive violation of one’s privacy depending on the situation. A great benefit from surveillance is mentioned in the area that includes the swimming coach. Surveillance of interactions between coaches and students creates safety providing safety against abuse.

Lang, M. “Surveillance and conformity in competitive youth swimming”. Sport, Education and Society, vol. 15, no. 1, Sport, Education and Society, 2010, pp. 19–37.
Gallo uses this source to support her statement. What is in it makes it quite obvious. This source brings about the issue of abuse in sports. It states how the relationship between coaches and athletes varies when in public and in private. The inclusion of surveillance, while a coach is in contact with a minor, is an argument in favor of surveillance. This was a great example and a good source used by Gallo.
Cooper, Frank. “The Spirit of 1968: Toward Abolishing Terry Doctrine.” New York University Review of Law and Social Change, vol. 31, no. 3, New York University Review of Law & Social Change, June 2007, p. 539–.
This source was used in favor of Gallo’s argument. Although it does not dive into the traditional form of surveillance by the use of cameras. It gives us a view into physical surveillance. This is shown by the inclusion of stop and frisk and people’s response to when their privacy is invaded. This article also splits people into different “boxes”. The people who do follow societal norms and those who don’t. Overall, it was a great source.
