ENG 2100: Writing 1 with Jay Thompson

Selina Wang Reading Responses- 11/17

    1. Why do most nutrition labels only show half serving sizes?

-American Obesity problem: Since this problem is well known that a good percentage of Americans are considered “overweight” then this would drive companies to make labels that appeared lower in calories, and overall, more healthier.

-Capitalism: Companies are greedy and want to make as much profit as possible. Advertising nutrition labels as half-serving portions would be a drive to buy the product which would mean more profit for these companies.

-More appealing: If the calories are less, it tricks the consumer’s minds and causes impulse buying

– Is this a way for companies to show us how much we’re actually supposed to be eating in a sitting?

2. After reading Jean-Pierre’s argument, I realized that even after passing the movement allowing interracial marriages, racial and gender inequalities are still present in America. The number of interracial marriages has soared from 65,000 to 422,000 since the Loving v. Virginia ruling was passed. However, many interracial lovers have been severely criticized and judged upon for their decisions. Especially the colored women who are married to white men. White men who are involved with Asian women are criticized for having sexual fetishes while black men who are attracted to white women are also seen as men with fetish impulses towards them. The article explains how most interracial marriages are seen to have motives, if it’s not for one’s power then it’s for one’s wealth. However, this argument is contradicted with an example using Obama’s story. The author proves how success can be achieved without being married to a white woman. Michelle Obama is a black woman and they are two of the most powerful people on earth.

3. “Chu, Y. (2009, September). The new trophy wife. Marie Claire, 124-126.”

After reading this article, I can see why Jean-Pierre used this to support her article. It explains the background behind the Asian fetishes using examples of many old white men married to Asian women more than half their age. On the other hand, these Asian women are seen as selfish and power-hungry.

“Crary, D. (2007, April 12). Interracial marriages surge across U.S. USA Today. Retrieved December 21, 2009″

This article is cited and used in Jean Pierre’s article to back up her information. She uses statistics from this article to support the percentages and rise in interracial marriage since the landmark was passed. They use real numbers backed by the Census Bureau data figures. Overall I think the author did a good job in choosing to include this source because seeing real numbers helps back up the data and makes the argument seem more reliable.

  1. Selina, very thoughtful close reading of these sources! I also think this outline of your argument is a great first step toward outlining your project as a whole– strong work.

  2. I really like your subarguments! I am very curious as to why companies make nutrition labels like that because I usually find myself excusing foods just because they are “low” in calories, not realizing the amount of servings it actually is. I wonder if a lot of people do the same.
