- Jean-Pierre’s argument of interracial marriages is a bit controversial in my opinion. His argument is that marriages between two people from different racial backgrounds is a result of social connectedness, which is also sometimes connected to fetishes of some sort. This is where the controversial part comes in because for the most part the word “fetish” is connected with a form sexual desire where gratification come from “unusual” aspects. Being called out on this sometimes makes people uncomfortable because its perceived to be an odd concept by society. So therefore, even if fetish is the right word for a specific situation, people would try and say something along the lines of “love is love”. However, true love and fetishes isn’t the only reason for interracial marriages. Sometimes its a way of power climbing social status climbing in order to gain power and status within a society because the white race is stereotypically considered to be the superior race which means power, money and importance comes with it, so sometimes will try to marry into the white race just for the privileges that the interracial union can bring them. This also ties back into aspects of fetishes, hence why it can be a very controversial topic.
- “Crary, D. (2007, April 12). Interracial marriages surge across U.S. USA Today. Retrieved December 21, 2009″
This article gives stats that illustrates the levels and rise in interracial marriage. This gives the reader real percentages and statistics that are supported by census bureau data figures. This is also an article that the author, Jean-Pierre, used and cited in her own article as supporting evidence towards her claim. I feel like this is an excellent choice in supporting evidence due to the fact that this article used real data showing how there was a rise in interracial marriage in the United States after the landmark civil rights legislation was passed.
“Chu, Y. (2009, September). The new trophy wife. Marie Claire, 124-126.”
This article supports the interracial fetish aspect of the article. It talks about one of the more common fetishes of how men marry or get into relationships with Asian women. On the man’s part, its more about physical appearance due to how young they look and how they are. These men generally just wanted to have these beautiful women around them as “eye candy” in order to impress other people. However, on the woman’s part, it is more about money for the most part. As I said before white men, specifically, are considered to be superior race with all the power, money and status so these women are gravitated towards these men because of the advantages they can get from this union.
