While being raised I was always taught to be respectful of everyone around me, no matter who they were. I was always praised when being respectful towards people, that I accustomed myself to just being the “nice and respectful girl.” That was up until I realized that although I am respectful toward everyone, some of those people will not show the same respect towards me. I found it weird when it occurred to me, “Were those people not raised the right way,” I thought to myself. Until it finally clicked. I got so used to being nice to everyone that I didn’t know how to be rude or just simply speak up for myself. I found it weird when I heard others being rude to their families, and now that I understand and look back at it, they weren’t being rude… they were just standing up for themselves and for what is right for them. Many may ask, “but how does that have anything to do with family or the way you were raised?” It has a LOT to do with family, especially with the way you were raised. Everyone in the world is raised differently and a lot of that depends on the culture that you were raised in. I was raised in a hispanic household which means that disrespect towards your parents or even your siblings was forbidden at all costs.

Karen, this excerpt connects the dots between family, culture, and emotion in a way that illuminates the relationships among all three. Very thoughtful work here.
