ENG 2100: Writing 1 with Jay Thompson

Nishmitha Rodrigo Literacy Narrative Scene

Have you ever felt stuck but without physical restrictions such as being in a prison or an asylum? You’re free but not so free at the same time. You have all the freedom in the world without actually being free. That is what it feels like to be a South Asian girl in an immigrant household. It feels like everything is as good as it can ever be but then comes these harsh expectations raining down on you to the point where you forget about all the good and positive things in your life. These expectations lead to clashes between daughters and their parents, at least this is what it was like in my household. I grew up here in New York City, which gave me a completely different growing-up experience than the one my parents had when they were my age back in Sri Lanka.
