ENG 2100: Writing 1 with Jay Thompson

Karen Leonardo Neighborhood Analysis

Before coming into my house we have to open this abnormally loud black gate.  A black gate that only opens one way which is outward, it is not higher than my hips and it is thin, an unusual thin metal. Right when it is opened I know exactly who will be coming in just by the way that it is opened and shut.  If it is shut too loud I know my brother will be the one who got home, if it is closed very slowly I know that it will be my father. This gate has a way of communicating with our neighborhood. It’s as if its purpose in life was to attracted the attention of others just by the way it opens and closes.

When I first moved to the home I am residing in at the moment I despised that gate, I asked myself, “Why does it have to be so obnoxiously loud when I close it?” The squeaking sound it makes when I open it is just as loud as the slamming noise. Someone would think the gate is being opened and closed aggressively when in reality it is just how it normally is. As hard as I tried to not make any noise I always fail. It’s as if the gate is programmed to let everyone know that I’m home, the gate very loudly screams at everyone in the house that someone has arrived. However, now that I have lived here longer and gotten so used to this loud black gate I came to the realization that if that black gate was never there I would never know who would be stepping into my home.  I wouldn’t run to my window to check who’s the one that closed it so loudly or slowly. I would be clueless and no one likes the feeling of not knowing, especially me. Although I appreciate this black gate as much as I do, I still do not appreciate how it has to let everyone know I’M home.

  • To this analysis I added the types of sound the gate makes when it is opened and closed,  I did that so the readers can get a sort of image in their minds of what I am trying to convey. I also added a “purpose” for the gate. I explained how the gate had a purpose in life and it was to catch the attention of others it is encountered by.

  1. Karen, this addition is terrific, and it seems to have led you to think more deeply about your subject– and to get more of your feelings about it onto the page. Striking choice of subject and excellent observations.
