- A scene that stood out to me was the scene where they described Serena’s rage. ” Serena in HD before your eyes becomes overcome by a rage you recognize and have been taught to hold at a distance for your own good.” This made me think “What do they mean by taught to hold a distance, is that like a racism thing?”.
- I feel that Rankine uses a lot of Pathos in the excerpt by using emotions to show the reader the point of the reading. Using language like “explosive rage” when describing Serena’s rage really sets the tone for how serious it was. Even the quote I used in my first prompt uses Pathos as it lets the reader know it was so scary you would want to stay away from her.
- I think the only time I used no words to communicate was in middle school. We were playing dodgeball in gym and this one kid decided to be a class clown and aim for the face, which is illegal in the games’ rules. He would continuously aim for my face and hit me many times when I wasn’t keeping my guard up, which then caused kids to laugh at me from the field and bleachers. When I had finally had enough, I caught a ball he threw at me and tossed it on the floor with a lot of force and gave him a death stare. He clearly got the message, since he decided to stop throwing it at me. The teacher also had enough, because she made him sit out for the rest of the game and talked with me after class. I put it off however, because I knew I had shown him something to respect that game.

Thanks for this, Ariel; this is an outstanding bit of silent communication. We say a lot with our eyes, our shoulders, our stance!
