Career Planning – Jane Peck

Posted in Uncategorized, Comments Off on Career Planning – Jane Peck

I thought that the information that was given to me was pretty helpful, although some additional research on the internet can do wonders as well. I will at one point maybe use the information given to me, but I am not sure as of now. I am interested in really any career in the business field, whether it be corporate or just a small business. I just want to make money out of my career so that I can save up and open up my own business. These tools given to me can help me because everyone has to start somewhere, and the STARR center can do that for me. I would love to gain experience by getting an internship by junior or senior year at baruch.

Meeting the author – Jane Peck

I thought the author was adorable in an odd way (may sound kind of weird). It was cool that the book was actually based on his own mother and that a lot of the story came from the heart. The author was a tad but boring to listen to in my opinion. He was nice an all but I probably did not want to listen because I was hungry and tired, and did not relate to him much.Although I did not LOVE the book it was a pretty good read. Can’t say i would read it twice…

Meeting the Author- Vanessa Gomez

I actually enjoyed the workshop and was intrigued by the author. I found his explanation of how he came about writing the book to be very sincere and interesting. I also found very fascinating that someone found out about his book and knew that the book was written about her mother, even though her real name wasn’t used. What really stood out to me was that the author said that when he came to the United States, his homesickness came very quickly to him and he longed to be home once again. I feel the exact same way at times about my native land, Dominican Republic. I liked his humor. What I didn’t like was that at times he was very repetitious. I could definitely relate to the book because I myself am an immigrant. My first few years here made it hard to adapt to American culture and life, just like Eilis’ time here. I read the book in the summer, which turned out that I didn’t really have to read the book. However, I still enjoyed the book. The problem was beginning the book, as with most books for me. But as soon as I began reading it, I was hooked and could not put it down. I might check out some of his other books, which I’m sure are just as great!

What did you think of the information you received? I think it is really great and convenient that we have the STARR Search available. That could help me in the future to help me find a part-time job. I also like that the school provides help with creating a resume and does mock interviews, which would be really helpful to me. I will definitely be using these useful resources. I loved the Freshman Checklist-very useful! It’s very important to start gaining experience right away because you will seem more attractive to employers because they will see you as a hard-working person who takes initiative and tries to be ahead of everyone. Also, with this economy, experience is everything! I’m interested in opening my own business, to be honest. I don’t want to work for others because I like to be the one in charge. If I did have to work for a company, I would like to be part of the team that deals with the international affairs. As a freshman, I’m not exactly sure where I could gain experience. If you know how, please let me know! 🙂

Things That Make Me Happy/Things That I Am Afraid Of

Things that I’m afraid of include great white sharks, box jellyfish, black widow spiders, komodo dragons, brown bears, etc. Basically, any animal that can kill me by mauling me to shreds or poisoning my body. I’m afraid of anyone holding a loaded  gun within my eyesight (who the F isn’t?!). I’m afraid of not  succeeding in my life. Unsuccessful to me means ending up with a crappy, low-paying and not finding the right woman to copulate with (and marry, of course lol). Unsuccessful also means not being able to send enough money to my family in Colombia who are constantly in need of some. What I enjoy most in life is sharing it with friends, lovers, and family. I love educating myself with a good book, informative television, TED videos, or New York Times articles. I love video games too. They are quickly becoming geniune works of art. Technology absolutely fascinates me. It blows my mind consistently. Listening to classic music like the Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd, Stones, Hendrix, Marley, BeeGees, Doors, the Who, Biggie, Pun, Big L, Joplin, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Eminem is also up there. Lastly, hallucinogenic drugs intrigue me and are an incredible experience that I love to feel and see once in a while. LSD, magic mushrooms, and marijuana are honestly great drugs that are sadly and mistakenly looked down upon in our society. They offer uplifting moods, insightful and spiritual experiences, different perspectives, and often, medicinal properties as well. There is so much to appreciate in this world!

Rubin Museum (Santiago)

The visit to the Rubin Museum was unexpectedly interesting. When I first heard that it was about the Himalayas and “it’s surrounding regions” I thought I was headed towards the direction of Boredom. Though the museum itself is small (especially since we didn’t get to see the other floors), I learned a great deal about the Buddhists. One of my close friends is a Buddhist monk and I always found his religion to be a little peculiar. Amazingly, the Buddhists are fascinating people who follow virtuous principles and contain so much spiritual knowledge. All of the sculptures of the different types of Buddhas or lower levels of “enlightened ones” were awe-inspiring. The little dark, gold and red room used for prayer/meditation instantly passed on some form of energy to me as I stepped into it’s premises. It was weird but in a good way. Overall I enjoyed my experience there and I thank everyone who allowed me to visit for free.

There are only two things I am afraid of. I am afraid of not succeeding, with my education and career, and I am afraid of my child getting into an accident. I don’t know what it is about motherhood, but when I am away from my child, I am constantly praying for his safety. Also, I must succeed for my child. He deserves to be proud of his mother and to receive the best life I can offer.

Something I enjoy is seeing my son smile and laugh. I feel an indescribable joy from this. I enjoy food a lot as well. I love to eat all types of food. I enjoy cooking too, because it feels good to be exceptional in the kitchen and for others to be amazed at how tasty and delightful my food is.

Since I was 8, I have participated in karate, chess, and dance. I have developed many skills in each over the years. These activities always release stress for me and makes me happy. The most important things for me are raising my son to be an intelligent, well behaved, well rounded young man and to complete my education and find a career for myself. I do not want to disappoint myself or my family.

Rubin Museum – Mona Balgobin

Visiting the Rubin Museum was definitely a great experience for me. I enjoyed going there as a class and learning about a new culture. I was never aware about the Tibetan culture and art. When I first walked in the museum I saw the small golden sculptures. They seemed very familiar to me because my family is Hindu and the deities were in that form and structure. However, after reading the descriptions of the sculptures I realized that they were not of the Hindu culture but of the Himalayan. Irene and our other tour guide did a good job of explaining the background and the procedures people had to go through to become Buddhist. One of my favorite exhibitions was the Tibetan Shrine room. It gave off a serene and peaceful vibe. The music and the lighting seemed like something you would find in a Buddhist temple in China, it was something like I never saw before. I was very happy that I got to go to this Museum, it was a great experience.
