The Baruch Experience

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d4/Straight_line.jpg

This a simple line, straight, solid, and true. As much as I would like to say that my time, so far, at Baruch is nothing but extraordinary it is instead something that has yet to really change anything for me. Over these past three monthes I’ve yet again began the arduous process of completeing school. To me, the time seemed both long and short. Days flew past and due to their swift going I cannot say I have anything that truly resonated with me. I am not saying that these three monthes were regrettable. I have met new people, and made some new friends, but on a true personal level Baruch has yet to reveal anything to me. I would say it is still too early for me to dictate my impressions and ‘experiences’ and so I chose a line as the best depiction of my experience. Yes, the line at its basic form is just a boring drawing that continues on and on, but to me this line is yet to finish its course. At the will of the drawer the line can become erratic, exciting, terrifying and beautiful. That is how I would like to describe my Baruch experience. Boring at first, but still too early to truly set my opinion in stone.

Enrichment Workshop

Life as it is can be considered short. However, time is really just relative to any one person, and as a result our lives can be seen to be short or long but what really matters are the moments that are spent in every waking moment. During, the workshop the group was introduced to Buddhist religion, and its everlasting cycle of birth and rebirth. Each birth could either bring one closer to Nirvana or push one even further away from obtaining everlasting peace from the suffering that accompanies life. The workshop has taught me that Buddhism is filled with culture and that the religion really is a reflection of how humans should treat one another. As explained by our guide, Namit, Buddha saw the suffering that all of us go through and decided to put matters into his own hands. Thus, Buddha began to meditate and from his meditations he achieved enlightment. From then on Buddha realized that for one to leave these suffereings one must leave all wordly possessions behind and only then could Nirvana be achieved. But, accompanying these teacings Buddha has given more insight to how humans can come closer to Nirvana through mere action. By continuously helping the poor or the misfortunate one can come that much closer to true peace.  This workshop resonated with me in a such way that helping others could in fact bring some kind of peace to the one performing the deed. Although this workshop did not inspire me, it did “enlighten” me to some aspects of our own culture.

Uh Hi

Hello, my name is Andrew Lim and if I am ever to talk about myself, I might as well first talk about my most important thing, and that is family. Without my family I may as well not be the person I am today and they are the very people in my life that guide me through the obstacles that stand in my way. No thanks can ever be enough for what each member of my family has done for me and to be honest I am pretty lucky to have them in my life and for that I’m thankful.
Ok, now all the touchy feely stuff is out of here I may as well introduce my “hobby” (if it could be considered one), videogames. There really is no real explaination here, as old as I am, I enjoy playing games. From the “childish” pokemon to the awesome modern games we see today, I happily play them not just for the amusement but for their own unique style that defines themselves as different as any other.
Besides my so called “hobby,” the only other real passion I have in terms of passing time is reading (seriously those long train rides go by in an instant when reading a book…… or sleeping, but that’s beside the point). Books aren’t just piles of paper waiting to be read, they are so much more than that. Reading them doesn’t only allow to enter a realm of unfamiliarity it opens the door to the author’s imagination. You not only become engrossed in their fascinating world, but also begin to maybe fall in love with it. (Even as I type this I am reading an interesting series of books by Stephen King).

Recognize this picture? In an age where internet memes and vines and adorable cat pictures seem to populate the internet, this picture is from my favorite show, The Game of Thrones. A show, adapted from a series of beloved books written by George R.R. Martin, introduces a compelling gritty world that is Westeros. The show is gory, and does not hesitate to depict disturbing scenes of violence, but that is not the show’s selling point. As you may guess with a show based off of a book, it is the story that compells others to watch and love the complicated characters, and mystical world that is Westeros.

This defines a lot of what I do when I am inside my house. Most likely my weakest point in character and most likely a trait that will be quite hard to get rid of. I can’t explain why I procrasinate, it just happens as seconds become minutes and minutes become hours.Time really does just flies away.

Not that spooky? sure. Even I know that ghosts aren’t frightening, but it does not change the fact I am actually scared of anything dealing with the paranormal. Don’t get me wrong, I read horror stories and the like frequently, but to watch that on the big screen…… NOPE! I avoid horror movies like the plague, and even my friends, who enjoy horror movies, berate me of my fear. After all, 18 and still scared of ghosts? YEAH. Of course the’re not real and all, but really, I don’t wanna watch a horror movie and suddenly realize I can’t sleep. I LIKE SLEEP.
Besides what I have listed above, about what goes around the internet, food is actually another that should be on that list. I like to eat food, and to be honest can’t really make anything special (except ramen? haha).
I enjoy nearly everything that deals with science. In an age where advances in all fields seem to discover new things that better humankind, I dare say I do enjoy what the human mind was able to discover from the smallest break through to the largest breakthrough mankind has ever seen. To me it opens up new horizons for the future and even enlightens me to what controversy may arise with such discoveries or theories (had an arguement that lasted over 4 hours discussing the danger aliens could posses for mankind).
