Jennifer Rubinshteyn – A Small Look Into Me

Hey guys! Here are some pictures that will hopefully give you a taste of who I am and the things that i’m into !

Jennifer Rubinshteyn 2

This up here is my dorm room. I’m from Brooklyn so i’m fairly close to Baruch, but I really wanted to start to live somewhat on my own and of course, away from home as most kids do. I wouldn’t change my decision for the world. There are some trippy posters, a backlight, hello kitty toys / memorabilia everywhere, an animal print blanket, a keep calm and rave on poster, a tie dye tapestry with fractals, a lotus flower, and buddha in the center, and my beautiful dancer hoop hanging above it (i’m learning the art of hoop dancing).

Here is my best friend Nicole. She lives in New Jersey but we still manage to see one another at LEAST once a month and do everything together from job applications, to shopping, to studying, to raving, etc. She is an inspiration to me in many ways and will continue to inspire me until the day we part.

Here is my other best friend and boyfriend Christian. I will say that we are the absolute best at making the most horrid faces you will ever see. I’ve chosen to showcase this (extremely partially/mildly) in some pictures. In short for now, I love him more than I love myself. I don’t want to go into my feelings here but if you guys are interested in hearing my sappy thoughts than feel free to ask me I looove talking about him.

Here are some photos of me at events (or raves if you wish). The first is of me and my friend Michael Wolf who I met through video chat and have been friends with ever since. The second is simply me showing off my arms of bracelets. In both pictures you can see that I’m wearing plastic beaded jewelry. These pieces are made by ravers and traded. They’re called “kandi”. You can make simple single bracelets and other pieces or more elaborate 3 dimensional things like the ones on my arms in the picture of me. They represent something called PLUR. An acronym standing for Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect. Ravers make them and wear them to events and give them away to their friends and strangers that they meet for many reasons. They represent a piece of your time and creativity that is then passed on to others. You can also see that in both pictures i’m wearing “weird” costumes. I’m very into costuming, cosplay, and other eccentric outfits.

Jennifer Rubinshteyn 5IMG_2734

I own a small individual company entitled ElectriCITY Gogo Wear and Costume Service. It started off with me simply making Gogo dancer outfits with bras, hotpants, underwear, skirts, boot covers, and other crazy pieces and was called ElectriCITY Bras. Now I am branching out into costumes as a whole and include makeup, hair, and other costume pieces in my services. I am at Baruch for this reason. It is my goal to take this business and make it into a touring costuming company that Costumes and does hair & makeup for everything from gogo dancers to circus acts to burlesque. I want to own and make this company successful. The first picture is of my boyfriend and I behind my vendors table at a rave that I sold my bras at recently. The second is a picture of one of the bra/headband sets i’ve made. (EDC stands for Electric Daisy Carnival – a huge electronic dance music festival)

Makeup

Above is a sample of some of the makeup looks that i’ve done.

Last, but most DEFINITELY not least, my friends. Here are some pictures of my friends and I. I love them with all of my heart and just from these few pictures you can get a taste of how absolutely insane we all are. Eccentric is not even the word, simply insane. We have the most absolutely crazy stories and always adventure together doing the dumbest and wildest things. Aside from the crazyness, they are the most loving and accepting group of people I know. What I adore about them most is how accepting they are of everyone around them and how fantastic their vibes are. They can make anyone into their friend and that is phenomenal. We’re just a family of what some would call “new age hippies”.

(P.S.: Sorry this is so late. I did some extra work on it.)

These pictures all depict a small part of who I feel I am today. I was born in Guyana, and I came to this country before I turned two years old. The image of determination embodies a trait I believe I have always had since I was little. Even if something may not seem attainable, I know through hard work and dedication, the outcome may be surprising. This also goes hand in hand with my goal of becoming a lawyer one day. I was an active member of Model UN throughout high school, a club which has given me the privilege of traveling to many different universities, to compete in debates about world issues. This club helped me realize that law is the career path that I want to pursue. Danielle Steel and Nicholas Sparks are two of my favorite authors, who’s books I have been reading for years.  Family is one of the most important elements of my life. For me, this doesn’t only consist of my parents and siblings, but also my cousins, aunts and uncles and my grandma. We all live within ten minutes of each other, and we have grown up as one close knit family.  My friends are another very important part of my life. During my senior year, we all took part in a cultural dance, which was a little nerve racking for me. However, it proved to be a great time and with months of practice, it was a success.  The flute was something that has been part of my life for almost ten years now, which I began playing in elementary school, and continued to play throughout my high school years. Tennis is a sport that I began playing at the age of ten. I had never picked up a tennis racket prior to that, and without even realizing, I developed a love for the sport. Joining the varsity team was one of the best decisions I made during my senior year.  Some things I enjoy doing in my free time are going to the city with friends or cousins, doing pilates, playing tennis, going shopping or hanging out at the beach.  These images embody pieces of who I am today, and the things that are most important and enjoyable to me.

Sorry I didn’t have time to make a video

So, I started to make a video and I had a script in its second draft before I realized it was Sunday… oops. Anyway, to be completely honest, I’m not big into music. I listen to it on my way to the subway and at the gym but I don’t have a favorite band. That being said,  movies are a big part of my life, so I’ve chosen movie things to put in instead of radio songs (save for a few choice ones).  So here are the explanations:

“Remember the Name”- This song motivates me in everything I do. I don’t give up, ever, and I know that I’ll be big one day. Like, it’s not a question. I will. I also know that it’ll take a lot of hard work. This song speaks to me in that way and gives me spirit and motivation. Plus, the violin intro is great.

Stars- Les Miserables is my second favorite musical, Javert is my favorite character, and Russell Crowe is my favorite actor. Naturally, this is here. This song represents the character of Javert and I’ve always sympathized with him the most because we’re similar. I believe that one must work hard and do good things in life. There is right and wrong and I don’t think that there are gray areas there.

Music of the Night- I listen to this song when I’m stressed, upset, or just falling asleep. I have a music box that plays it. It’s very gentle and Phantom is my favorite musical of all time, and what inspired me to want to be in entertainment.

I’ll Make a Man Out of You- Mulan was the only Disney princess I ever liked, and this song also motivates me to work hard. It was the theme of my epee squad when I first entered the fencing team freshman year, and it inspires me to be tough and do what I have to do.

Soul Bossa Nova- The first movie I saw in theatres was the original Austin Powers, which is one of the few things my dad and I have in common, which is why it’s here. I don’t talk to him much, but whenever Austin Powers is on TV, we order a pizza and watch it together.

American Pie- It’s just a beautiful song. It makes me value life and what I have in life, and reminds me that time moves fast so I can’t waste a single moment with negative feelings.

Hedwig’s Theme- Harry Potter has a very special place in my heart, like it does for billions of others. Hearing this gives me both comfort inside and nostalgia for my childhood, but no matter what I always feel seven again when I listen to it.

White Christmas- It reminds me of home. As soon as it hits December 1st, this movie gets played in my house 24/7 courtesy of my mother. I am not exaggerating when I say I have memorized every single second of the two hours of this movie. It’s grown incredibly annoying. However, it reminds me of my mommy and I love her, and this movie makes her happy. She isn’t happy all too often, so seeing her smiling and relaxed is one of the best things to lift my mood.

L-O-V-E- This is in every single RomCom from the 90s. Every. Single. One. And my family inexplicably loves RomComs. One of my fondest memories was when I was eight watching “The Parent Trap” remake starring Lindsay Lohan and waltzing to it with my big sister while my mom video taped it. So that’s why it’s here.

In My Life- Even though I couldn’t find the link, I had to include this song. My sister will be walking down the aisle to it in two weeks. One of my earliest memories was my sister and I talking about future weddings and she said she was going to marry a Backstreet Boy, and she would walk down the aisle to this. Years later, that’s what she’s doing- I mean, he’s no Backstreet Boy, but he’ll have to do. I love my sister more than anything. She is my best friend in the world and I’m happy for her but sad at the same time. I cry every time I hear this song and it will always be special to me.

My Slideshow – Parneet Kaur

http://www.kizoa.com/slideshow/d5857751k9343674o1/this-is-who-i-am

-This slideshow showcases who I am… well as much as one can show in a matter of eight slides. I am very family oriented and for me, family is over everything. My mother is my rock and my go to person for any worries, my dad is my support system, my brother is the jokester and brings all the fun, and my sister is my role model; the type of person I hope to become one day.
-The next thing important in my life is my friends. These 5 girls mean everything to me and have made me the person I am today; I couldn’t be more grateful for them.
-Next is desserts.. or just food in general. I am in love with sweet and chocolatey things. I eat all the time, no matter what mood I am and I am very thankful for my fast metabolism for without it, I would probably resemble a hippopotamus.
-The type of music I listen to varies from One Direction to Paramore and Green Day. I love going to underground shows for bands that are not that well known like All Time Low, Pierce the Veil and Sleeping With Sirens. As everyone else does, I listen to different music depending on what mood I am in.
-I absolutely live for shopping and carry my debit card everywhere with me. This is bad because I do not know the value of money and spend it on everything and anything I like.
-As many American girls are obsessed with Hollywood, I am obsessed with Bollywood. Bollywood is like the “Hollywood” of India and I hope to work in it one day. I love the movies, soap operas, music, dances, food and clothing that goes along with the Indian culture.
-Something I always have in my bag is my Nook. I enjoy reading because it lets me escape into a whole new world for a few hours. Some of my favorite books are The Kite Runner, The Great Gatsby, the entire Harry Potter and Hunger Games series, and any romance books.
-Kids have been a big part of my life because I have been working/volunteering at my elementary school since the 6th grade. Around these kids, I become a kid myself and forget all the stress I have and focus on just having a good time. Walking in and being swarmed by hugs and kisses by a group of kids everyday just warms my heart.

My Playlist

This playlist pretty much sums up who I am. “I want it that way” is a song that reminds me of the past and how simple I wish it used to be. “You’ll be in my heart” explains how family is one of the most important things in my life. All of the party songs show how I love having fun and that I know how to have a good time. If I ever see anyone frown or just having a bad day, I would do what ever it took to make that person smile, even if I look foolish in the end. Finally all of the love songs are because every time I meet a girl I love, the one thing I know that I must do is do everything I can to make sure she is happy and loved. I don’t understand why some guys treat women like crap. Every woman deserves to be treated like a princess by the man she’s with.

The Playlist of My Inner Mind

The Musical Layers of Maisha

The Musical Layers of Maisha

The creation of this playlist was not an easy feat. I have to choose only 10 songs that represent the inner workings of my mind? With great difficulty (meaning in 20 minutes), I chose 10 songs in the order that I believe is how I present myself to people. Ever since November of 2012, I have been listening to K-pop songs the most. Please don’t ask me which songs in the U.S. are in the Top 40, I don’t know. But I can tell you which K-pop group is going to release a new album! I can also tell you which group is currently on tour in Asia! As much as I love K-pop, I also can’t stop listening to “High School Never Ends” since I feel that the lyrics have some measure of truth. I feel like I’m the only person who can listen to the same song on repeat 20+ times. I’m also slowly trying to get into J-pop, but I feel like it’ll take a really long time. 🙁  I hope to show that I’m not some misguided “fangirl” who does nothing but scream, but that I get excited when there’s a new release from my favorite group. (Teen Top FTW!!!!!) Please don’t judge me for liking Asian music more than American. :/

Freshman Playlist

Not Afraidby Eminem     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5-yKhDd64s

This song shows that I am independent. It represents my ability to stand up for what I believe in, as well as being able to face the challenges that life throws at me. “I’m not afraid, to take a stand, everybody come take my hand”

All I Wantby A Day to Remember    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pn-6eOxnEMI

Shows that I am content with the choices I have made and that I am looking forward to my future.

Basket Caseby Green Day      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUTGr5t3MoY

This song symbolizes being young, restless and stressed out. This song can relate to my life because I am currently young, going through the trials and tribulations associated with being young. I am restless from all that psychology reading we have to do, and I am stressed out about all the uncertainties in life, and what might happen next.” I am one of those melodramatic fools, neurotic to the bone no doubt about it”

Good Riddance by Green Day     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bTdLi0YUVM

This song represents my life, and most likely everyone else’s in block 9, in a state of transition. Going from high school to college is like night and day. Being able to come out on top after those changes makes all the difference. “It’s something unpredictable, but in the end is right, I hope you had the time of your life”

Radio Activeby Imagine Dragons      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktvTqknDobU

Represents a new beginning, one without someone controlling what you do. Another comparison of high school and college when in high school your constantly being aided and push to succeed, while in college its only you, no one is holding your hand.

Lean On Me by Bill Withers     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJZ3bcPr-Ds

I can relate to this song because I am a dependable person. I am also not afraid to ask for help, nor do I judge those who ask me for help. “You just call on me brother, when you need a hand. We all need somebody to lean on”

Remember the Name by Fort Minor     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDvr08sCPOc

When I set my mind to something you better watch out, this song represents determination to overcome challenges in life and strive to be the best I can be.    “10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 50% pain, and 100% reason to remember the name”

Life is a Highway by Rascal Flatts      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvsmRuRp4cM

This song symbolizes how life can take you on some wild rides, through the good times and the bad, just try and hold on. You never know where it will take you next.

The Times They Are A Changin by Bob Dylan     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCWdCKPtnYE

This song shows how I’m able to adopt change and go with the flow. It represents how Life is constantly changing, either change with it or sink like a stone. “You better start swimming, or you’ll sink like a stone, for the times they are a changing”

It’s Time by Imagine Dragons     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sENM2wA_FTg

Represents being able to get up after life knocks you down and keep moving forward, life is a game of inches and you must fight for every last one of them. “so this is where you fell, and I am left to sell, the path that heaven runs through miles of clouded hell”

I don’t think there are any songs that describe me fully but those come close and these are just my favorites that I listen to in the gym and everywhere else. The way I am by eminem describes me partially because like he said i am who I am and no one can change that. I like loud by Mac miller because I do like my music real loud. Good to go by yelawolf is how I feel like when Im getting ready for a club or for a party. I like we made you by eminem because he generally makes fun of everybody and its just funny. I like wild boy by MGK because it has a nice beat and is like a perfect song to listen to at the gym. I like not afraid by eminem because I think it’s his best song and is perfect for any real life situation. Lose yourself by eminen is a classic and real helps you understand eminem’s struggles. Stan is also a clasic because of the way eminem combines his rap style with Dido’s chorus.  I like take from me by bad meets evil because its just overall good the beats nice the lyrics are good and so is the chorus and also eminems verse at the end is perfect.

Playlist

Freshman Seminar Playlist

This playlist does not only show my unique flavor in different music genres but I chose these songs because these are my “Favorite Songs” which I had many memories with. I grew up hanging around and meeting a lot of people especially during the nine years of soccer. I was able to listen to many different types of music because I interacted with many different ethnicities. Some of these songs go back tot he sixth grade in which I was closest with my cousin and we used to listen to music together. I also included some of my songs that I used to listen to on road trips for soccer tournaments as well which used to get my hyped for the game.
