Walking into the room I was expecting to fall asleep. I thought it would be repetitive and I pictured professors going on about studying and doing the right thing or whatever. I was surprised however to see mostly students in the front. Some were only a year older than us. I though the presentation was very interesting. All the students who were up there were all part of something. All of them were either president, vice president, or in charge of something. When they were talking about how involved they are and all the benefits they got from it, it really made me want to be apart of a few clubs. Showing leadership like that makes your resume look so much better than the next person. One of the girls that were up there even got job opportunities because of the sorority she is apart of. You can network so much when your apart of these and apart of the many events these clubs host. Right now, after I finish classes I usually go home right away because I don’t have anything else to do. I would feel so much more involved if I was apart of an organization or club. I stopped my self from joining any clubs this semester so I can focus on my classes and transitioning successfully. Next semester however, I have so much planned out for my self. I hope to join Women in Business next semester.

I found the workshop to be very interesting and very informative. It also inspired me to be more active student here at Baruch since the message, “College is what you make it,” was repetitive throughout this workshop. I haven’t had the time to be more involved at Baruch since I was still getting used to the beginning of college, but I think I will definitely become more involved starting next semester. I am going to look into joining clubs, since that is a great place to start forming close bonds with people who have similar interests with you. I also want to do “Adventure Weekend” either next year or another year, because that sounded really fun from the way they described it. I also found their message, “If you’re feeling comfortable, put yourself in an uncomfortable situation,” and “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room,” to be very inspiring as well. Basically, from these messages and from the workshop as a whole, I learned that there is always room for progress and that the goal in life is to become the best you can be.

This meme basically demonstrates what most of us go through the night before a Political Science exam. So much studying goes into the exams, especially the night before. My first semester wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Of course the work load is a lot more, the exams are much harder, and you actually have to read when professors tell you to. My first week was scary because everything was new and I didn’t know anyone. And I knew that I was on my own. Unlike high school no one was going to hold your hand through everything in college. Thankfully my learning community was a great group of people. I made lots of friends through it all and I don’t have to go through all of this alone. Almost all my classes are different in its level of how hard or how easy. Philosophy was a class I thought would be really easy but it turned out to be one of the most challenging. Only because the concepts are very hard to grasp and fully comprehend. Political Science is very straight forward but the exams are hard. The rest of my classes I can pretty much handle for the most part. Pre Calculus is my most difficult class. Math has never been my strong point so right now I’m mostly focused on getting through that class. Freshman Seminar was helpful in getting the basic knowledge of how to handle college. Being in a learning community helped me in getting everything together and making my transition into college easier. I’m happy I made the decision in coming to Baruch. I have so much available to me and so many opportunities. It has been a lot of fun these 3 months and now I look forward to my next semester, which I hope will be has memorable as this one.

I got this meme from the Baruch Memes page on facebook and I think it describes this semester perfectly. This was definitely a tough semester. It was hard to adjust to the new college life and realizing that suddenly there’s no one to hold your hand or tell you what to do. It’s all up to you now. I come from Brooklyn Tech which has a total population of 6000 kids. So the vast amount of students wasn’t too different. But the material was harder, keeping up with deadlines was harder. Over here it’s like you either do bad or good. It’s all about numbers and getting ahead. The worst part of it is not knowing where you stand. That’s the most nervous thing. I really don’t know what I don’t know. Adjusting to some of my classes was hard and some of them were easy. Philosophy has been one of my hardest classes and will continue to be. It’s one of those classes you find completely pointless and you just don’t understand because there’s no right answer. English has also been a lot of work. However, I really like Baruch’s community. I get so many more opportunities here that I could have never dreamed of in high school. There’s so many resources available. It’s your job to make the best out of it. The students here are so much more friendlier than the high school I went to. Everyone is nice and helpful. Every time I have a question I know there’s someone that can help me. All in all, although it has been tough I honestly love Baruch. I think it’s just hard for everyone first semester because we don’t know what out GPA is like yet but it has been fun. I did meet a lot of people and I am glad I came to Baruch.

I really enjoyed this workshop. It was funny and inspiring. I really liked how it started off with humor, it was interesting and I actually paid attention the whole time. It definitely inspired me to join clubs next semester. I think the main reason I didn’t want to join a club this semester was because I really wanted to adjust to the college life first. I don’t know where I stand or what my grades are and I want to find that out first before I really commit myself to something. Like the student leaders said, academics should always come first. I do think joining a club and trying to take up on a leadership role looks good on your resume because it shows that you can keep your grades up while committing yourself to something else. It also gives you experience and it teaches you. I liked how one of them said to always put yourself in uncomfortable situations and that’s how you get the best out of you. I actually believe that, when you put yourself in a completely different and new position somewhere you though you’d never be you definitely learn something about yourself. I learned that if you really want something in life you have to go out there and grab it. Baruch definitely offers me a lot of oppurtunities, I just need to go out there and grab them. I am planning on joining student government next semester.

My group choose to pick the conflict with Syria as our topic. We choose this because it was a raging issue and was very publicized, we felt that war is a topic that can be seen from two different sides and both sides can be argued very well. This conflict made us think whether it would be best if the united states waged war with Syria or just stayed out of it for the better of our own country. We spoke about the two sides and how if the united states went to war it would further hurt our economy and many innocent lives that we have nothing to do with. My group felt it might be better to just stay out of it, some argued the opposite, which is why we picked this topic, for its popularity and the depth you can go to argue it.

My group chose to focus on Syria in our New York Times Project. We decided on this topic because it was and still is a big problem facing all Americans. It may not directly affect us as students, but if we enter another war, the repercussion, good or bad, will fall on every American. Basically, we spoke about the current conflict in Syria. Syria’s mass supply of chemical warfare has caused serious problems and led to the death of thousands so far. The last article we wrote about was trying to get at a solution to the issues, however the solution has remained unresolved.

As the Fantastic Four, our front page deals with foreign affairs. We chose to select articles regarding foreign affairs in countries such as Russia, Kenya, China, North Korea, Iran, and much more. We chose these selections because foreign affairs is definitely an issue that makes up an important part of our lives. We live in New York City, which is a very diverse city. We also attend Baruch College, which is one of the most diverse colleges in the United States. Therefore, it is important that we learn about all of the cultures we have here. We also live in a crucial time where as a country, our decisions and choices that we make with other countries can have a lasting impact on our country and its future. Also, learning about foreign affairs is a big part of broadening our understanding of different countries.
