Hurmat Hashmi

Hello everyone! My name is Hurmat Hashmi and I am seventeen years old. I will be eligible to cast my votes for elections as of November 2 (go Scorpios!)  I am undecided on what I should major in, but I am considering finance. I am, unfortunately, often indecisive on several matters.

But one thing I am sure about is my passion to help others. I find it important to be able to give back to my community in any way possible to encourage positive change. I love to work with nonprofit organizations such as the Resilience Advocacy Project, which seeks to rid of injustices that often result from poverty and to empower the youth of New York City through numerous action-based programs. Another nonprofit I work for is Publicolor, which transforms public spaces and other institutions throughout bleak, often disadvantaged New York City neighborhoods into vivid, brightly painted areas that enhance the academic environments of young people.

I participate in various different programs and am therefore pretty busy a lot of the time. I’m sure that for many of us, it would be so much more convenient to have more hours in the day to do things we really like. I have enjoyed painting ever since I was a tiny tot and wish that I had more time to create new works. The last thing I created was a tulip for Mother’s Day using acrylic paint. I like listening to almost all kinds of music and seeing different dance styles. I think that music and dance are so important in many cultures and are usually among the staples of people’s interests. In my free time I like to practice a variety hairstyles on myself and my sisters; we often volunteer ourselves as each other’s lab rats.

I also like not having to do anything at all, but this doesn’t happen as frequently as I want it to.

My life is defined through the scope of my images and poetry.

Food for Thought

An apple a day keeps the doctor away,

Well a poem a day keeps the therapist away,

Throw words on a paper and build stocks,

Make it flock till it flies, and add a side of fries,

To the irregularity of the mind that yearns for props,

Props that create a masterful performance in the parietal lobe of the brain which stimulates my awareness and colors my perception,

Add a jingle and make it rhyme,

Till your cerebellum is soaked in the venom of the tune to your lyric and your momentum is sped up by the way your tongue twists and spits to the rhythm of my words,

Words that carry no meaning alone,

But together they create a partnership,

But together they create a mob,

But together they create an army,

And it keeps growing and growing your frontal lobe can no longer solve problems and the only concentration in the matrix of your brain is the prosperousness in the richness and thickness of the words that splurged together to make an impact,

They only way I really know how to stay intact,

Start a post-modern movement with no punctuation,

or create a post era to that post terror and obliterate the paper with a rising fluctuation of punctuation,

then let the vibration of this abstraction hydrate the nation,

It does not matter how you surveillance the order of your words as long as the cadence of your words knocks the patience of my sword that slices through the fruition of this college tuition that my mind has absorbed,

The cadence must make my nose smell the fragrance of the roses that died on September 18, 2001.

A week after a tragedy where we wanted to bring life back, but these roses demonstrated the cycle that life’s black,

And we can’t revive a shade, but we can color a tune if we unite as a whole and in this hole my words purge on your soul,

Because I was pulled out of kindergarden without knowing I would not be back for a month,

Yet I haven’t ate an apple in three months,

But my words spark fear into the evil that cannot stop when I strive,

Because Poetry..

That’s the shit that keeps me alive.

Freyia Kang

Hi, my name is Freyia Kang aka Ye Seul (my korean name). It says my all my pictures are too big to upload here so.. I’ll figure out a way to post them somehow………… Just come back to my post sometime later.

I was born in Korean in Bucheon, which is right next to Seoul. When I was 6(like 4 in american age), my family moved to Gangnam, Seoul. Like gangnam style! I have a picture of me when I was 7 months old. Maybe I was trying to smile at the camera? The picture with the bunch of kids is when I went on a trip in preschool. They made all of us wear yellow uniforms. The picture of the tree is a cedar tree, a tree I am extremely allergic to. I seem to be fine with the actual tree, but not products made from the tree or the tree pollen during spring. My allergies are really bad and my eyes get really itchy and swollen during April. Don’t ask me if I cried if you see me during my allergy season!! The picture of me and the horse is when I used to work at the queens botanical garden during senior year. The picture of the birds show my bird, Yundu, meaning light green in korean. He is a green cheek conure and about 6 months old now. And hes not dead, he liked to sleep on his back (not anymore for some reason). The picture of the boy with the bird is when I brought my bird to my old afterschool. I sometimes would bring him and let kids play with him. I really love animals. In fact I used to major in animal science in high school. The pictures of the rats are my research rats from high school. I did a research on whether environments affect the learning abilities of rats. Rats are so smart and cute:) If you want to hear more about my project or anythjng else, feel free to ask me.

Growing up in Brooklyn, I was strongly influenced by my surrounding culture, where looks meant plenty to

the residents of these areas. You were easily judged by friends and fellow classmates, whether it was

making fun of your ‘high water’ pants or your ‘beat kicks’. Not that I actually cared to adjust my looks

according to others, but this opened my mind to the ability of self expression through one’s outfit. I began

to consciously buy Jordan and Nike as early as 5th grade, where I would ask for a pair every birthday and

save up money to buy more pairs. While a few of my fellow Brooklynite classmates might own a new pair

every month along with $200 outfits but be too broke to afford a slice of pizza after school

(seriously, I had to ‘spot’ them a dollar on a weekly basis), I learned how to balance my finances so that

I could indulge in food, a movie, or sneakers. You won’t find me dressing fresh to school often, my

daily outfit is not a priority to me even though I own well over 70 pairs of sneakers worthy of a fresh outfit.

Now you can catch me in contemporary fashion and streetwear magazines (as pictured above) waiting for a

new ‘drop’ at a boutique or a concept store almost every week whether it’s in locally in Manhattan or in

another city like Boston.

It was difficult for my mother to let me go out on these trips, sometimes without a friend or my brother, but

she has reached a point where she understands that it’s better than using my time and energy on drugs or

other nonsense. I did give her several mini-heart attacks when I surprised her with my high school graduation

outfit, which was composed of gold sneakers (threw on a navy pair on my right foot at last minute, oops!),

a french terry t-shirt and sweatpants, and a custom-stitching to my gown (I wasn’t going to customize my cap

like everyone else). I pushed the boundaries on her traditional-mentality, she almost cried because I wouldn’t

wear a suit but it was all laughs when she saw that classmates of mine literally went to graduation in shorts and sandals!

I find myself to be more active in the hours of the night (evidenced by the fact that I did this blog at 4am),

where I find myself designing and sampling on paper or Adobe for a clothing collection that I plan to deliver

by next summer.

Besides my passion for fashion, traveling and getting the most out of what the world has to offer is a priority

of mine. Above is shown two last-minute trips the week before college began, one to the Poconos where I

went paintballing and water-rafted in a level 4 River for the first time. And the other is me in Albany, where

me and my brother caught the last bus to go see our cousin pitch in a Minor League Baseball game.

Also, you can see my green bike (may it rest in peace) that I used to ride to explore corner to corner of

New York City until it disappeared when I left it in front of my house overnight because I was too tired to

bring it up since I had arrive home late that night from riding around for hours.

Well, I’ve reached my 500 word count. Peace!

Michael Tsui

quiet MLB bb swim

origami

Hi I’m Michael and these are some of my characteristics/interests/hobbies. Well if you know me in class the first thing that usually comes to mind is that I rarely say anything. There’s really not much I can do to change your mind because I will always be a little quiet. In spite of the fact that I will never be the most talkative person (which I’m not really aiming to be), I do wish I could voice out my opinion a bit more. It’s nobody’s fault except for my own, really, because if I ever come up with something to say my mind usually filters it back for seemingly no reason, leaving me with absolutely nothing to say. Other parts of me include being a procrastinator (shown by how I just started this at 10pm), and that I strongly believe that what goes around comes around and everything will balance out in the end (yin-yang).

Well enough of my personality and onto my hobbies~ Basketball was my “first love” so to speak in that it was probably the first thing I ever worked hard at. I was introduced to it in my 4th grade gym class and it’s hard to say it was love at first sight… but it stuck around and I spent practically the entire 5th grade simply learning how to shoot. In the past two years I have finally given major league baseball another try to watch, which has been successful for the most part, after getting literally bored to sleep in previous attempts, and I learned how to swim between ages 10-12. I learned how to fold paper into various forms during elementary school (known as origami) that only recently have I begun to pick up again (for those of you who are in my Speech Communication class this is my how-to topic). Music is love, music is life, it is what can help clear my mind after school, give me a good start to the day, and it can help me keep concentrated on my work (like now).

Thank you for reading this~ (^_^)/

Moustafa Ismail

Me&DadMoose.FishMoose.FriendsMoose.Egypt

NFLCooking

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog post! I chose these pictures because they perfectly describe my character, values, and hobbies. My name is Moustafa Ismail, a 17 year old born in Cairo, Egypt. I chose to attend Baruch because of it’s high rank amongst business schools and wish to pursue a career in investment banking on Wall street. The one thing I value the most is family. In fact, my favorite part of the day is when I sit down and enjoy dinner with my family while sharing stories and telling jokes. At that moment, I forget about all my problems and stresses of the day, and become relaxed as I am surrounded by my dearest people. My father is my biggest role model. When he was only 19, he came to America alone and worked three jobs in order to raise enough money to ensure that my siblings and I would live comfortably. My ultimate goal in life is to one day repay him for all that he has given me and much more. I also consider my best friends to be apart of my family. Since childhood, we have remained the same group and continue to strengthen our already unbreakable bond. From the moment we finish school on Friday, we immediately meet up and hang out until school resumes the next week. One of our favorite things to do as a group is fishing. The fish seen in the picture above is a 47 pound Striped Bass, the biggest I have ever caught. By the time I reeled it in, my arm was ready to fall off! Every Sunday during the fall, my friends come over to watch the week’s best football game. Everyone brings food and we all have a great time crowding around the television and enjoying each others company. My favorite team is the New York Giants. Although the Giants haven’t been doing well lately, I remain a die-hard fan and carry an optimistic attitude every Sunday. Recently, my mom would come home late from work late and ask me to make dinner. This led to me picking up one of my favorite hobbies today. I began to like cooking when I saw my family enjoying something that I made from scratch. This made me eager to try new recipes and before I knew it I began experimenting in the kitchen and making new dishes which is now my favorite thing to do whenever I am bored at home. Every Summer, I make the trip back to my home town. I take great pride in being Egyptian and enjoy going back to relive my childhood memories with my extended family. When it is time to leave, I look down on my country from the plane window and cannot help but feel as if I am leaving a piece of my heart behind.

Thanks for your time!

Garfield Hylton

IMG_1355IMG_0422IMG_1504IMG_2099Hello Guys, I’m Garfield as you all should know. I am one of those multilayered guys, you will never be able to know who I truly am just by a first impression. I have been the type to love the simpler things in life. I much rather spending my lifetime with the people I love than be isolated and filthy rich.

Love motivates me to do most of what I do. My love for my family pushes me to do my best in life, because I want to be able to put a smile on all their faces. Especially my mom, although she died, I still want to make her proud because she gave her all in me to make sure I’m the person I am now.

Enough of my soft side. Lets talk about my exciting side, if I have one, it’s up to your interpretation. I am a PROUD martial artist. Ever since I started at age 13 I fell in love. It was so hard and intense and it gave me a challenge as soon as I conquered another. Becoming a Martial Artist was ONE of the best decisions of my life. It bolstered my confidence and embedded new abilities in me I never knew I had.

Eh if I didnt bore you with my blog leave a comment lol. There is a lot more I could say but I’m going to leave somethings a mystery 🙂

Eswar Dommaraju

Hi guys! I’m Eswar Dommaraju and I feel like these pictures represent me as a person and some of my interests.

I have always loved music. I play the Tabla, which is an Indian percussion instrument played with the fingers of both hands. The number of variations and beats that can be played on the Tabla is what initially attracted me to it and over the years I have been lucky enough to give live performances.

I also love to sing and have been doing so for a long time. I learn what’s called Carnatic Sangeetham which is a style of singing associated with southern India and won a couple of singing competitions. I listen to all sorts of music as long as they have good beats and try my best to learn to sing all types of songs.

I really enjoy playing basketball and tennis. LeBron James has been my favorite player ever since his Cleveland days and I am excited to see him go back and play for his home team. I want to try and get tickets when he comes to MSG to play the Knicks and see him live for the first time. Tennis is an awesome sport and playing for my high school team with some of my best friends senior year really gave me some amazing memories.

Riding my bicycle was always one of the things I used to do when I was bored, growing up in Rego Park, and still is something I do in Hicksville. I just go around town and explore new neighborhoods or places to chill with my friends that I’ve never noticed before. Plus, it’s a great workout.

The picture with the water fall is my home town in India called Tirupati. It is one of my favorite places in the world just because of how much nature surrounds the town. Tirupati is surrounded by hills and my Uncle has a house right at the bottom of the hill with spectacular views of the waterfalls that come to life during rainfalls. All sorts of animals show themselves as soon as you start the short journey to the top of the hills which is something I always look forward too when I visit.

Spirituality is a fairly new interest of mine that I have adopted because I feel like it balances my life. It allows me to look at the world in a totally new perspective that really keeps my mind open to absolutely everything.

The movie reel is just because I like watching movies. I will watch any good movie out there no matter what language its in as long as its got subtitles. I feel like movies are an escape from reality for at least a few hours that provide amazing entertainment no matter the genre. Going to theaters and watching them on the big screen is something I’ve always enjoyed rather than watching them on television which just doesn’t have the same effect. Having an actually home theater with recliner seats and a popcorn machine would be so cool though.

Monica Mikolajczyk

Hey guys, I’m Monica and by the pictures I posted I think you guys can assume that I love skateboarding.

I’ve been skating since sophomore year, but started skating more transition (ramps and stuff) recently. The first 6 pictures I posted are from Woodward Camp, which I went to for 3 weeks this summer. Woodward is skate camp, and it’s awesome. The first 2 pictures are from me and my cabin woke up at 5:30 AM so that we could take pictures in front of the sunrise. We were all exhausted but it was definitely worth it.

The 3rd picture is really important to me because it was from the day that I got to meet 2 pros at camp, Manny Santiago and Dave Bachinsky. Getting to do a professional photoshoot with Dave Bachinsky was like a dream come true, the best part about it was the next day when I was hanging out with all my camp friends at the coffee shop, he came up to me and high fived me.

The last 2 pictures were taken by my friend Connor, who I met when I first started skating 3 years ago. He completely wrecked his ankle skating, and as it turns out he’s a great photographer.

I don’t really do much other than skate, but I do love reading and adventuring (which sounds really cliche, but whatever).
