I chose this gif simply because it represents the way that many of us have been thrown into the real world. When I was in high school, it felt as though I was always babied into things, there was always someone there to hold my hand when I needed help. However when I got to college, I realized this was no longer the case. There’s no one there to tell you that you need to do the work, no one that tells you “remember that this is due tomorrow,” no one to help you every step of the way. Reality smacks you in the face and you realize the only person that can help you is yourself. You can’t rely on others to do things for you. And though this may seem unfair, we have no choice but to suck it up and deal with it. Only we can push  ourselves to get out there and fulfill our potentials, there’s no point in complaining about it.

Devanie’s Monologue

Everyone tells you about the fun you’ll have when you go to college. But they forget to tell you about the stress you’ll get from teachers, tests and even making friends. When I was going to my first class, I was so nervous, I didn’t know what to expect. Everything was so different, I knew no one in my class and I wasn’t sure how everyone would act towards each other. I was afraid that my professors would be hard on me or wouldn’t like me. However, once I got to my first class everything felt so much better. I was no longer nervous, I actually felt excited. Going to college was a big deal, and I felt like I was growing up. I remember having a sweet 16, and that’s when everyone said I was a “woman” but honestly, I didn’t feel like an adult until I walked into the doors of Baruch. Everyone and everything looked to different to me, but I was eager to explore the campus. Now that I’m getting into the hang of everything, I realize that it’s not all that bad. I admit, it’s stressful at times, but I know I can handle it. One thing I learned is to not be lazy, which is the hardest thing for me to do.

It’s very difficult to describe myself or who I think I am within just  eight pictures. However these pictures do represent some of the many things that are significant to me. My sister Sonia and my best friend Sarah are the people I trust the most, and the two people that help to motivate me and I can count on them to be there for me whenever I need help. I sometimes find it hard to rely on others for anything because I’m a perfectionist but they help me to realize that people aren’t that bad. I can be shy at times, but when I really get to know someone I’m able to open up to them and express myself more. My dog Fluffy is also a big part of my life because he’s a big responsibility and also a part of my family. He’s like the baby in my house because we all spoil him and he gets away with pretty much anything. He also helps me when I’m stressed out because I always feel a lot better when I take him out to the park or for a walk. Three things that my life also consists of are: 1. Eating, 2. Music, and 3. Reading. I love to eat, especially french fries, but I can be really picky with my food which my mom really hates. I’m not as open to trying new things, but lately I have been and the foods that I have tried haven’t been bad. Music and reading are both a big part of my life because in a way, they’re my escape from the real world. Whenever I listen to music or read a good book I feel at ease and I can forget whatever has been bothering me. I also have loved reading since I was younger, I would love to go to the library and pick out new books to read for the week. I would take 4-5 books at a time and I always read at a higher level so I learned to read very fast. Another thing that is significant to me is travelling. I would really like to see new places and meet people around the world, its always been one of my goals for when I’m older. I think that learning about and experiencing new cultures is amazing because people can be so different yet so interesting at the same time. Since I’m Hindu, one of the places I would like to visit is India because it seems like such an amazing place with many sites to visit. Basically, these are the things that help to define  who I am as well as who I want to be.
