Career Blog Post

On November 16, 2017 I attended a career workshop for the first time. I had to sign up using the Starr Career Development Center which was a really confusing process. It took me a while to find where to sign up because every time i tried to search it up in events, nothing would come up and I had to get a fellow classmate to send me the link to where the signed up. Overall, the process for trying to sign up for one of these events was more work than it needed to be and I expected it to be easier than anything since this is an important thing that many Baruch college students should attempt to attend during their four years. I was immediately placed o n the waitlist and was worried that I wouldn’t be able to make it in the workshop.

However, when I showed up, they gladly let me in and I was able to attend the workshop. When i entered the room, which was a little difficult to find since it was on the 14th floor of the new building, which I’ve never been to and didn’t even know existed, I saw a whole bunch of recruiters and many professional looking people ready to present and tell us about marketing. It was a huge conference room with at least 15 tables. This was a particularly interesting workshop for me since I’ve actually been considering being a marketing major. They talked about the steps to getting a career in marketing and the ranges of the types of careers in this field. It really opened my mind up to new possibilities to what I could choose from.

Afterwards, they had an open network session where you could try out networking with recruiters and talk about possibilities into future internships and such. I sadly didn’t stick around for this part because internships or networking isn’t on my mind yet since this is only my first semester in Baruch. However, if I ever attend another Marketing Career Expo in the future, I would definitely stick around for the networking portion.

Academic Workshop: Topic Sentences

I’ve never been great at writing essays, usually waiting till the last minute to write up a six page essay and never having a great flow throughout. After having to write an essay for my english class last week I realized that I definitely needed some help. So I headed myself to the writing center to learn and pick up new skills. At first, a couple peers and I got lost and ended up in the celebration outside on a balcony I had no idea we had. But we ended up finding the actual room and it was quite smaller than I anticipated.

We had to sign up with a sweet lady and then she allowed us to enter inside. There was only a handful of people attending, maybe eight to ten people. The professor conducting the workshop was really sweet and very passionate on making us understand how the thesis statement and topic sentences of future paragraphs have to tie together. She had us identify different uses of topic sentences and used an idea (?) to grasp how important a topic sentence may be. She said a typical topic sentence written by a student is like velcro, easily ripped off, but a topic sentence should be like a needle and thread, holding everything together much strongly.

The professor had us read an essay and then use highlighters to highlight different topic sentences and their correlating mention in the thesis statement. Afterwards, she had us fill in a chart on how the topic sentence tied with the thesis statement and then how the topic sentence tied to the previous and upcoming paragraphs. Overall, I had an excellent time attending the workshop and I definitely picked up many new tricks, tips and new ideas for any upcoming essays in the nearby distant future.

Baruch Accounting Society

On Thursday I attended the general meeting of the Accounting Society Club. While I am undecided, I thought it would be interesting to attend a club in a potential major. When i entered into the room, everyone from the club were very friendly and had pizza and cookies laid out for potential club members. They started off with a picture game, which lasted around half the time we were there, and then the club president had a slideshow presentation about what the club offered and what the members could sign up to be (such as participating in little subcommittees). Joining this club, me and many other member will be able to meet potential big business that would maybe lead on to an internship and even potentially a job offer at their firms. They talked about every possibility available such as meeting with big corporations, having a group resume writing session, mock interview sessions and much more. This club also focuses on giving back to the community, not just focusing on the career, through charitable walks and donating to different organizations. Members have said that companies actually look and are interested in those who give back to the community. This club seems to be very interesting in the fact they focus in not only the career path, but also in giving back to the community. Each member seemed eager for you to join their subcommittees and even talked about stepping up into getting a larger role for the club. They all seemed very happy to be apart of the club and encouraged everyone to feel the same way. Everyone seemed very genuine and willing to answer every and all questions anyone had. Even though, this club didn’t seem like a fit for me, there were hundreds of more possible suitors for this club!
