Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DMC

Bystander Intervention Training

Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence Awareness Training.
It started with bystander, which means someone around the situation but not involved. “ By-standing affect” means the more people in the room, the less action will be taken because each person will assume other will do something. The leader introduced Brock Turner, who committed a sexual harassment. Luckily, he was caught by the police. The witness share the testimony, the experience to help case deal. This is a perfect case. However, the other case is Matthew Barnett’s tragedy because he was drunk a lot of alcohol and left out in the cold. When his mother found him, he is frozen and felt internet- shaming afterwords. Three methods of engagement: distract, delegate, direct.
Actually, there were some examples the leader put I the ppt which are similar with the examples the sexual website provided. And she analyzed the examples and list the actions we should do when some one was assaulted by other one. What allow this type of thing to happen?
From the low rank to the high rank of recognition of the sexual violence are visual, verbal, and physical. And the frequency for those happened is in the reverse order.  To my surprise, most of us are apathetic bystanders and it enables some offenders within conducting the sexually verbal, physical harassment. Remember: alcohol never causes sexual assault. The video named Who Are You? Gave a impressed story which tells that anyone in that story took actions will avoid the tragedy. All of this can be different across identities and backgrounds.
Ten signs of a healthy relationship are comfortable pace, trust, honesty, independence, respect, equality, compassion, taking responsibility, loyalty, and communication.
In the end, I filled out a sheet of evaluation. I think this is very helpful for me to recognize the potential dangers, the action which should be taken to help others, and the confidence for the rightness.

  Resume/ Interview in Actuarial Science.

The club showed that they have several positions like assistant Vic president, the assistant vice of president of relations, event coordinator to recruit. The requirements are good academic standing, and the deadline is November 30th. I think it’s a good chance for me to gain a position in the club so that it can be listed on my resume in the future to make be outstanding. Another thing is that the club introduced to us some courses of technical skills for ACTEX. It sounds good.
The leader showed us an example of a resume, which is only one page both in word and pdf form to confirm it is one page. It includes the actuarial requirements, education, experience (on campus, MetLife), leadership activity, some volunteer activities. The first thing is to show what skills you have, like the language you can speak and what technical skill you equip, like Microsoft office suite. The resume starts with your name in the middle. After it, your phone number- email address, then the website written below the in the middle.
If the resume has some grammar mistakes or problems, we need to keep correcting. For writing the experience, especially the technology solutions, as detailed as possible. Otherwise, it will be confusing for others to understand. The details are really important but don’t be tedious.  About the leadership activities, it’s ok to write member if you don’t have a position, but write it in detail like you show something, some products in the activity. For language, not only describe what kinds of languages we can speak, but also demonstrate how to use it. Making resume’s information sure. We can go to the writing center to correct the inappropriate. I think, for me, it’s better to have a resume as soon as possible because it will let us be confident to get familiar with ourselves. The resources: Kalos Consulting; The interview of Alex Zalavskiy, FSA which will be held on October 31st.
For the interview, it’s hard to be exceptional among tons of resumes. The procedure is first to apply, then prepare, next phone screen, then on site, and finally to wait.  The lunch in the company may be a part of an interview. Therefore, be sure to eat meals before interviewing, and when you eat, don’t speak. Before ordering, asking for the recommendation, so that avoiding order either cheap or expensive. Don’t pack the food home. Eat slowly. Going to career fair for help. For preparing, it’s better to research the company (website, WSJ newspaper), learn the industry (Investopedia), and technical skills( micro office suite, VBA, R, C++, Python etc.) In the end of the interview, ask questions, ask for the business card, send thank you emails, and ask when you will hear back. A really good source is the “Glassdoor”, there is some axa equitable question, so we can use that information to do full preparation.
Actually, my major is Accounting. However, the Actuarial Science club taught about how to write a resume that has some overlaps with Accounting. That’s very helpful for me to know about the organization in it and the importance of it, so I have some directions toward beginning with my resume. During the workshop, one senior shared her interview experience. She said the company really emphasizes the leadership, so I think maybe in the next semester, I’ll participate in some leader positions to enrich myself, my resume, my college life.

Either add alt text or mark the image as decorative. On September 12th,2017, today, I went to Accounting Society’s interview workshop. It’s my first time to attend such awesome form of workshop. At the beginning, the leader did the presentation about the process of interview, pre-interview tips, and what should we do during and after the interview. Initially, the leader introduced to us about the organization of OCR (On Campus Recruiting) and STARR, and the essential for me to know is that if I want to apply for certain positions with firms, I must be OCR certified. After that I can apply to internships and full-time positions. The second thing is to practice interview because practice makes perfect, and it will help me become easier with time. And before the interview, I need to google the firm first, and thorough in my research but do not memorize everything. If I know who will be interviewing me, look them up on Linkedln. The notable point is that “you never know who is watching you and taking notes!”, so being kind to everyone who you meet. What’s more, for the common interview questions “tell me about yourself?” The tactic is to reiterate your major and year in school, why you are interested in this position, what skills you possess that make you qualified, and how you can benefit the firm; education, work/volunteer experience, social activities etc. In addition, after the interview, make sure to thank the interview as well as those who may have greeted me while I am exiting the office, using email or thank you card.

Last but not least, during the workshop, the leader was allocated to each group, and in each group, they simulated a interview. Through participating in the mock interview, I had a precious experience in interview question and pattern which inspired me a lot to do lots of work to practice and in the future, maybe next year or in my junior year, I will attend to OCR to get certified!
