Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DMC

  Resume/ Interview in Actuarial Science.

The club showed that they have several positions like assistant Vic president, the assistant vice of president of relations, event coordinator to recruit. The requirements are good academic standing, and the deadline is November 30th. I think it’s a good chance for me to gain a position in the club so that it can be listed on my resume in the future to make be outstanding. Another thing is that the club introduced to us some courses of technical skills for ACTEX. It sounds good.
The leader showed us an example of a resume, which is only one page both in word and pdf form to confirm it is one page. It includes the actuarial requirements, education, experience (on campus, MetLife), leadership activity, some volunteer activities. The first thing is to show what skills you have, like the language you can speak and what technical skill you equip, like Microsoft office suite. The resume starts with your name in the middle. After it, your phone number- email address, then the website written below the in the middle.
If the resume has some grammar mistakes or problems, we need to keep correcting. For writing the experience, especially the technology solutions, as detailed as possible. Otherwise, it will be confusing for others to understand. The details are really important but don’t be tedious.  About the leadership activities, it’s ok to write member if you don’t have a position, but write it in detail like you show something, some products in the activity. For language, not only describe what kinds of languages we can speak, but also demonstrate how to use it. Making resume’s information sure. We can go to the writing center to correct the inappropriate. I think, for me, it’s better to have a resume as soon as possible because it will let us be confident to get familiar with ourselves. The resources: Kalos Consulting; The interview of Alex Zalavskiy, FSA which will be held on October 31st.
For the interview, it’s hard to be exceptional among tons of resumes. The procedure is first to apply, then prepare, next phone screen, then on site, and finally to wait.  The lunch in the company may be a part of an interview. Therefore, be sure to eat meals before interviewing, and when you eat, don’t speak. Before ordering, asking for the recommendation, so that avoiding order either cheap or expensive. Don’t pack the food home. Eat slowly. Going to career fair for help. For preparing, it’s better to research the company (website, WSJ newspaper), learn the industry (Investopedia), and technical skills( micro office suite, VBA, R, C++, Python etc.) In the end of the interview, ask questions, ask for the business card, send thank you emails, and ask when you will hear back. A really good source is the “Glassdoor”, there is some axa equitable question, so we can use that information to do full preparation.
Actually, my major is Accounting. However, the Actuarial Science club taught about how to write a resume that has some overlaps with Accounting. That’s very helpful for me to know about the organization in it and the importance of it, so I have some directions toward beginning with my resume. During the workshop, one senior shared her interview experience. She said the company really emphasizes the leadership, so I think maybe in the next semester, I’ll participate in some leader positions to enrich myself, my resume, my college life.
