Diversity Within the Muslims

On Thursday, November 2, 2017, the event, Diversity Within the Muslim Ummah was hosted in the 14th floor conference room of Baruch College’s NVC building. I chose to attend this event not only for this blog post, but also for my sociology class. As the clock hits 6:00 P.M, the event officially begin with Islamic praying rituals. They pray with songs that I never heard of before, but it was every nice. After the praying was done, the first speaker was invited to the stage. He was a very funny guy who talks about how current Muslims are facing so much discrimination that it never happened before.

The next group of speakers represents diversity in profession, which different Muslims from different work setting talk about their life as a Muslim. These guest speakers studied in the fields of health, physiology, and computer science. The question for them was how does their background influence their profession. There were many answers, some said family, and some said belief. The second question was challenges they face in daily life, most of them agree on the biggest challenge was fitting into the community without losing the Muslim identity. So, I though to myself, it is more important to fit in or not losing its own belief. I did not come up with an answer because without either one, is hard to live as a whole in the society, so I admired them for choosing to stay with religion.

By the end of the event, I got a better understanding of the religion Islam and Muslims. I think is unfair for people to think negatively about Muslims because of 9/11 and ISIS. To be honest I think, Muslims are a group of very nice people, they stay strong about their own belief, even when the society is acting poorly on them. I think they have a very beautiful culture, and everyone should respect it.

Ad Hoc Major-Create your own major

It was Thursday 4:45 p.m, I just remembered that I have a blog post due on the next Monday. So, I check on the Starr website to check if there was any career workshop to attend. On the Starr I found a workshop called “Create your own major”, and I was quickly attracted by this title. So, I asked two of my friends to come with me.

In the workshop, I found out this program was called the Ad Hoc Major, this program allows you to design your own major if you feel like the current Baruch majors does not fit your educational interest. Instead of taking the regular classes that the college assigns to take, students in this major will combine courses from two or more departments to receive the education they think that will help them more in the future. For example, a guest speaker told us that as a previous Ad Hoc Major, he felt like Baruch give him a lot of classes that he doesn’t need to take, and this will slow down his education process, so he created his own Ad Hoc Major that only contains the courses that he needs.

There are a few requirements in this process. The first one was to create your own schedule that makes sense. The second requirement was to write a proposal explaining why do you think this major should exist. The last step was to get signatures from the departments that your major consist, the dean, and the Ad Hoc Major faculties.

After attending this workshop, I begin to think about making my own major, because I want to focus on online business in the future, but I don’t think the regular majors will provide such education about the internet market. So, I might create my own major in the future.

Baruch E-Sports Association

It was Thursday, September 7, 2017 12:30 pm. Me and my friend Xin Tao decided to check out the E-Sport club event at room 4-180. We were both into gaming, he plays Cs Go, and I play League of Legend, that probably why we become friends so easily. Anyways, we arrive at room 4-180 5 minutes before 12:30, but the room was already pack, there was only one seat left. My friend sat down, and I stood on the side like some other people did. Everyone in the room was discussing about their games. So people were talking about Over Watch, and some people were talking about Cs Go. and more than half of the room were talking about League of Legend. This guy right next to me was telling another person how annoying Singed(a champion in League of Legend) can be. And there was another group not far from me was talking about the new League of Legend updates. Few minutes later, a girl with a hat walk inside the room and introduced herself to the room, her name was Tiffany and she was the president of the club. Then she started to present a power point about the club. I learned that there are 3 competitive teams of League of Legend and 1 Cs Go team in the club which were the 2 most popular games world wide. The teams compete with other schools and play in competitive events. I was very interested, I am sure everyone who plays League of Legend dreams to become a professional player one day. Next, she also introduce other games that are available in the club but there are not enough people to make a team. Finally, we were separated into groups base on what games we played. Everyone in my group have to imitate a skill of their favorite champion, it was really fun. All in all, this club makes me feel comfortable, and I decided to join it.
