Ad Hoc Major-Create your own major

It was Thursday 4:45 p.m, I just remembered that I have a blog post due on the next Monday. So, I check on the Starr website to check if there was any career workshop to attend. On the Starr I found a workshop called “Create your own major”, and I was quickly attracted by this title. So, I asked two of my friends to come with me.

In the workshop, I found out this program was called the Ad Hoc Major, this program allows you to design your own major if you feel like the current Baruch majors does not fit your educational interest. Instead of taking the regular classes that the college assigns to take, students in this major will combine courses from two or more departments to receive the education they think that will help them more in the future. For example, a guest speaker told us that as a previous Ad Hoc Major, he felt like Baruch give him a lot of classes that he doesn’t need to take, and this will slow down his education process, so he created his own Ad Hoc Major that only contains the courses that he needs.

There are a few requirements in this process. The first one was to create your own schedule that makes sense. The second requirement was to write a proposal explaining why do you think this major should exist. The last step was to get signatures from the departments that your major consist, the dean, and the Ad Hoc Major faculties.

After attending this workshop, I begin to think about making my own major, because I want to focus on online business in the future, but I don’t think the regular majors will provide such education about the internet market. So, I might create my own major in the future.
