Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DMC

Baruch College Written Center

Baruch College Written Center

On Saturday, I went to Baruch Writing Center. Baruch Writing Center would help students’ writing problems. There are professinal people worked in the writing center who  always provide serious and useful advise to help students do the second and third essay revision.

Students need to make an appointment on website before they go to the writing center. And if studnets late for over 10 minutes, the writing center will delete the appointment. So arriving on time is important. It is better that students bring an essay which wants to make imporvement to writing center. A good essay needs to be revised second or third times. Writing center suggestions on writing skills would help you on improve your writing radically and essays would get higher grades in class.

After students leave from the writing center, they would sent an email or feedback to students’ course professors. To mentioned that there is another person help this student revise this essay. Most of professors would achieve the second revision, while there is a little professors do not adopt the second revision and they still grade the orginal one.

The people in writing center are very nice. I have arrived on time, and the teacher was waiting for me in the office. In my appointment, my purpose is to revise speech essay, she helped me a lot, changed my grammer mistakes, create a properly speech structure. Also, she gives me some useful website to help me solve my grammar problem, that is the most important point. I achieved a lot from the grammar website. Writing center is not only help me revise my essay, but also help me improve my writing skill. I like to talk with the teachers in writing center, I could truly feel that they are willing to help you. After I finish my revision, writing center’s staff told me an effective way to make an appointment next time. Furthermore, she told me that I could also send my essay to writing center email and I could get feedback at home in 24 hours. It is so convenience but I prefer talk to teacher directly.

West Indian Culture Club

The West Indian Culture Club, also known as “WICC”, is a club that is really associated for people who have Caribbean background. When I heard of this group I was approached by the President of this club and was already offered a position in this group. Currently I am the director finance in this club and I am going to be given the chance to groom to be the treasury for my sophomore year. Being given this role made me feel more comfortable to the transition in college.

On my spare time between classes. I always head to the club room and the environment when I reach there is always a friendly place to be. Being in the club made me be aware of many different events and different clubs that are so closely related to the WICC club. Throughout my years in Baruch college I believe that this club would be apart of me for my years here.

Writing center workshop

I went to the writing center on this Friday because my English class required us to go there at least twice. It was hard to make an appointment because all most all the time were full. Finally I chose an one hour appointment on Friday even I don’t have class on that day.

It was my first time went to the writing center, so it took me some time to find it. There were several students in it with their teachers. My teacher is Poupeh Missaghi. I went there with my entrepreneur report because I want to let teacher correct my grammar mistakes. My essay always have so many grammar mistakes like use of the article, tense of the sentences, and use of correct words. The teacher introduced an Online Oxford Collocation Dictionary to me. She thought it was helpful because you can find clear definition and examples of the way of using words. She said she was also an international student before, so this way helped her a lot in correcting grammar mistakes. I also need to focus on my pronunciation because I have a presentation on Monday. Because of that, the teacher in the writing center let me read through my essay and corrected my pronunciation. I had some accent in English and I also had pronunciation errors. The teacher listened carefully each sentences and told me the way to prove it.

I think it is very helpful to go to the writing center because it actually give you a hand on your writing. I will go to writing center again no matter the professor required or not. I think it can prove my skills of writing and help me to get better grade in my English class. However, it’s better to make appointment early because there are so many people attend to go there.

Writing Center Workshop

On Thursday, October 27, I attended a 90 minutes writing center workshop. I went with a friend who had register ahead of time online. It was a last minute decision for me but I was able to walk in. The main topic was about “Avoiding Plagiarism and Citation”. In this workshop, we learned learn what plagiarism is, whyit happens and how to aviod it. This was the first writing workshop I had attend. Although the topic of plagiarism was already learnt and disscussed in my English class, I think the workshop was helpful and informative to a lot of people. This workshop helped claify other people misunderstanding about plagiarism. With a group discussion, we learned from other people mistakes and their perspectatives on plagiarism. After we have identify what is considered plagiarism, we learned different styles of citation; MLA, APA, and Chicago format. I recommend people to use Purdue Owl website for more information about how to site different sources. This activity was very fun and engaging that I didn’t realize an hour and half of my Thurday afternoon break was gone. I would come back to attend other Writing Center workshops.
Later that day, I went on Baruch Writing Center website to find out more about the Baruch Writing Center. I saw that I missed some past but interesting workshops, such as translanguaging and cover letters. In the future, I will be sure to keep in mind to check my Baruchmail often. They notify you about upcoming workshops and events. I also discovered there are many resources on the website avaliable to students, such as online writing guides, peer reviews, and one to one sessions. The handouts from the workshops can also be found online.

LGBTQ Wear Your Colors – Tie Dye

On Thursday, October 26, I decided to attend a student event held by Baruch’s LGBTQ Group where we all got together and use dyes on t-shirts, bandanas, and tote bags. In order for one to be able to use dyes on clothing, it has to be a material that absorbs the color such as cotton which in this case, I used one of the white 100% cotton bandanas and one tote bag to get dyed. I actually let my tote bag get stamped using a process one of the members developed where they use a board and a press using a design stencil cut-out on the board where it will get imprinted. They had an interesting heart-shaped pattern that I decided fit the tote bag perfectly well. On the other hand, I decided to attempt to self-dye the bandana by myself. I did not know that beforehand, you were supposed to soak the tote bag if you wanted the dye to stay on permanently.

Anyways, I used a variety of different colored liquid-based dyes to color my bandana. I used rubber bands to create breaks in the color by leaving gaps where the dye cannot soak through. Overall, I think I am thoroughly impressed with the results of both items. Before this event, there were many considerations beforehand but now I know that the LGBTQ student organization is one full of talented artistic individuals who want recognition for who they are and for others around the world. There is a lot of problems that members of the LGBTQ community face today in this world and they need the recognition for who they are and not be rejected by society. Honestly, I think I will come around for future events if I have the time and see the potential of what these individuals can do. Both my tote bag and bandana came out great!

Learning the “DOs” & “DON’Ts” in formal dining with STARR

I came across this Dining Etiquette Workshop flyer around late September, and it really did caught my attention. First, I am a foodie, and it seems there will be good FREE food at this event. Secondly, I seldom have the chance to dine out formally, and I knew that there are plenty of rules hidden underneath this dining culture. Especially for me, coming from a different culture background and using chopsticks all the time in my home country, I know that this event will help me to know more about the manner of the American dining culture. And if I happen to have a formal Lunch or Dinner interview or social event, the knowledge I learned will help!

Signed in, came back into the same room 705 in the library building where I had my orientation, it reminds me that I have spent half of a semester in Baruch already – time flies! Beginning with an introduction of the guest speaker Terri Thompson, an etiquette expert from Paris, Kentucky. She is funny person that teach us all the stringent rules about formal dining in a interesting way. The STARR have prepared us a nice nutritious, multiple-choiced meal with salads, pastas, bread, chickens and desserts! Terri Thompson taught us from the most small little essential things like how to place a napkin properly to cutting pieces of meat with our knives, spooning the soup, what to do when we sneeze…

I like this event a lot! Not only because of the food, but also because I am glad that Baruch have offered this kind of unique opportunities to learn something that are usually not teach in school. As a girl who don’t usually get the chance to dine out and my family didn’t teach me all these dinner etiquette, I am grateful to have this workshop.

Baruch College

Baruch College has 130+ clubs. Your fellow classmates exhibit a great deal of initiative, energy and imagination, the nature of which is displayed in the clubs, organizations and the activities they provide.

Clubs and organizations span a wide range of interests. There is something for practically everyone. Membership in a club offers you a place to meet new people, as well as an opportunity to develop important communication, organizational and leadership skills.

Our school encourage students choose something that interests or start your own special interest club!

Most Undergraduate Clubs meet on Thursdays, 12:40 to 2:20pm (Club Hours). Clubs meeting at other days and/or times are so noted.

As a freshman, I have been told that every students should join in a club to  improve our social network and have abundant school life. And the school club provides a good place to communicate with peers who have the same interests.

I have searched many clubs on school website, while there is a club same as brother club which attracted me.

During the meeting, the group senior numbers introduce the basic rules of that club. Also I got that this club will introduce the internship timelessly, and it will improve our networking.

While, the clubs’ event is making sandwiches to homeless people today, it is an excellent events. Making sandwiches for homeless is a kind of philanthropic, moreover this event is like a ice-breaking games. It deleted our embarrassed with first meet friends.  From the picture we could see that all the clubs number made so many sandwiches together. I enjoyed this club!

Club Fair

Last Thursday, I attended the Baruch Club Fair that was going on inside of the schools main gym. The whole purpose of this event was to inform students on the different types of clubs that were at the school and that there is many clubs you can choose from. As I stepped in the gym I haven’t seen such a lively event at a school. Everyone was dancing, and communicating with one another. Seeing all of the interactions everyone was having made me think to my self that I should try a club out. So that’s what I did.

I seen many clubs giving advertisements of their clubs but one stood out to me the most. Which was the West Indian Culture Club. This club stood out to me because I seen my countries flag in their advertisement, which is the Jamaican flag. So right there and then I had to learn more about them. The people who were showing off the group were so friendly. They came up to me so fast and introduced there self and asked if I was interested. I played this game which was I would have to guess the flag. It was actually very fun at first until I started to lose every time I would guess the flag. Another club that caught my eye a lot and is almost associated with the West Indian Culture Club is the Black Student Union. This club caught my attention really quick because of what the people who were advertising it was wearing. They were wearing clothing that you would see at the Labor Day Parade. Overall, the event was a total success. Because I was really informed in clubs that I was not aware that was at Baruch College. Being in a club during College seems to be the number one thing to do so you can live the college dream to the fullest.

Conversation Partners Program

I am Phuong Huynh, an international student, non-native English speaker, who is still struggling in class to express myself, to understand lessons, and to have confidence in public speaking. That’s why I attended in Conversation Partner Program to develop professional skills, improve English, moreover, I have the ability to get to know people’s cultures and also can have a lot of fun.

When I got there it was a little bit late, I saw people were standing in groups getting to know each other. The first time they were in groups of people living in the same borough, the second time the same major, next time the same horoscope.

After that, we were arranged to stand in groups of about five people, holding random people with both hands in the group and we had to make a circle without letting any hand go.

Later we picked partners, I and my partner sat opposite to each other, back to back, I faced the wall and she faced the screen. We switched chair a couple times. We played a game that the rule is the person who faces the screen has to explain what is on the screen for his or her partner to draw, but the person who faces the screen cannot look at what their partner draws and the other person cannot look at the board. I think maybe the point of the game is to help us to find out our skills of explaining to others. It made me realize my vocabulary of geometry is so poor. I learned some words from the game though.

It was a fun and exciting experience of participating in Conversation Partners Program. I think the idea of organizing this program is both meaningful for non-native English speakers and native English speakers – they can learn a lot about people’s cultures and have a lot of fun as well.
