Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DMC

Resume Workshop

On Thursday during club hours, I attended a resume workshop where students were taught how to write a good resume as well as preparing for interviews. There are different factors that needs to be considered when writing a resume including presentation such as organization and format as well as what information to include such as college, GPA, job experience (duration, location, job position), leadership activities, volunteer experience, and skills. At the same time, it is also important to avoid any grammar mistakes and students should make sure they ask other people to review their resumes first for any feedback before submitting them. A good place that students can go for any resume feedback is the Starr Career Center. Resumes should be written in either the past or present tense and proficiency of a language should be specified. It is best to include some bullets describing each job position and make sure that job descriptions are meaningful and inform employers about what type of person a student is. Since a resume should only be one page long, it is important for students to be meticulous about what they should include in their resume. Students should fill up their resume and avoid any white space. When it comes to applying for a job, there is a higher success rate in getting the job if a student attends a network event or a career fair rather than just applying online. In this way, students are able to connect to their employers face to face rather than compared to online applications, it may be hard for applicants to stand out. During interviews, it is important for students to do their homework, research about the company including their history, interests and values. It is suggested for students to attend mock interviews so that students can be prepared and talk in a confident tone. Students should make sure that their answers to interview questions are unique and stand out and send thank you emails to their interviewers after the  interview. To get some bonus points in an interview, students can also research their interviewers through websites such as glassdoor and LinkedIn to get a glimpse of what they are looking for.
