Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DTC

Baruch Voices

For my third and last blog post, I went to Baruch voices. I went to support my friend Carl Rubio who was performing on the stage from my freshman seminar class. I was excited to go because I had not gone to any Baruch events yet so it was a chance for me to do something and get involved. I was also excited to see other students. I left very happy. I got to see many other Baruch students perform their work. All their work were very different. Their work really expressed what kind of people they were and real life situations. One girl who was African American for instance expressed her troubles of dealing with people who had stereotypes of her. The performances really gave an insight on what these people deal with people and they were very much relatable. It was a great experience.

STARR

For my blog post, I decided to have it be about a career workshop this time. I decided to head over to the office of STARR Career Development in Baruch. STARR helps students by preparing them for jobs and internships and careers. STARR provides career counseling, mock interviews, resume building and fairs for students to find jobs or internships. STARR even provides professional clothing for students who may need it. I was familiar with STARR because it helped me find my work study job. I now work at the Baruch Early Learning Center. I decided to go to the STARR office and show them my resume so that I can get advice on it. I always had a resume but it was never fully looked at by someone else. It was made based off of what I knew myself. So I wanted to take it to the office so that they can tell me what to fix for the future when I needed to hand out my resume. STARR helped me out a lot. They showed me what I needed to fix and what I had done right. I learned how to emphasize work that I have previously done in a right amount of words. It was vey helpful because resumes are very important because they highlight all that you have done which would help a person get further in life.

The MET

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has always been a place that I wanted to visit, but for some reason, haven’t. With this blog assignment, I found the perfect excuse to go visit. Just standing in front of the famous museum, I was very excited. Definitely more excited than I thought I would be.

When I realized that the MET had an Ancient Egypt Exhibition, I knew that was where I wanted to go first. Being Egyptian, and not knowing much about the culture, I really wanted to see what they had. I wasn’t disappointed. The exhibit had pretty much everything from hieroglyphics to statues to gold. It was amazing to me how much actual stuff from Egypt they had that was in the museum. Walking through the exhibit, truly made me feel like I was walking through Ancient Egypt.

The last time I been to Egypt was about three years ago when I had actually went to visit the Museum of Cairo. The exhibit in the MET reminded me of a mini version of the Museum of Cairo. They had many similarities such as having a room filled with jewelry and gold, which is one of my favorite sections. Although the MET did not have mummies like the Museum of Cairo, it had plenty to remind me of my Egyptian culture. I had a great time and definitely see myself visiting again.
