Career Workshop- Blog #3

Today, I attended a career workshop and the subject of the workshop was Careers in Marketing. The speakers of the workshop were professors who teach at Baruch and were both at one point in a job that was focused on marketing. They created presentations through powerpoint to help us better understand all the different types of jobs in marketing that are out there. This workshop was perfect for me because I am interested in pursuing a career in marketing and found that many of my questions were answered in this workshop during the presentation time as well as at the end when questions were being answered. One of the questions that was asked was “how to understand the marketing world?”. The workshop explored how to navigate certain sections of the overall marketing category and how certain aspects of marketing such as public relations, communications, advertising etc differ but each have their own unique benefits. The workshop also discussed the topic of how to find a job in the marketing field. We learned that in order to successfully get a job, we had to create a resume which made us stand out from all other applicants that employers may receive. By doing this, employers will want to hire people who they deem as dynamic, interesting but most importantly passionate. These qualities are the most important when it comes to applying for a marketing job as well as the right amount of experience. Another useful tool that was highlighted at the workshop was how to make a video which promotes ourselves and ur interests. By making these promotional videos, we can show employers what we are like in our everyday lives as well as our hobbies and interests and makes us seem even more interesting and worth employing. The last thing I learned at the workshop is that the STARR Career Center is always there to help with questions I may have about internships and to help me with my resume. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. SACC Math Tutoring Session

For my student activities session, I decided I was going to utilize one of Baruch’s most helpful resources and pay a visit to the Student Tutoring Center. The Student Tutoring Center is located on the second floor in a quiet corner of the building. I really needed help in math since the math course I am currently in is starting to get more challenging as the weeks go on. In order to make an appointment, I had to sign up a day in advance online. There are many slots to choose from since the tutoring center is open for most of the day Mondays through Fridays. I chose a early slot and was paired with a student who was extremely knowledgable of the subject I needed to cover. Each tutoring session is an hour long and completely free! I was so excited to see that there so many student peer tutors around forth just help out. Throughout the hour long session, I was able to get a better grasp of the material as well as meet new students who were friendly and supportive. The Student Tutoring Center has a really serious but fun atmosphere that was extremely engaging but at the same time not intimidating. I found that as the hour went on I was not bored or dozing off but was completely engaged in the material and found it more comfortable to work with a student one on one. The Student Tutoring Center is definitely a part of Baruch that I will continue to utilize. I suggest that everyone visit the Student Tutoring Center because not only is it free, but fun and has a great atmosphere. I have already signed up for an appointment next week with the same tutor and look forward to learning so much more.

FRO BLOG #1- Joining Hillel

For the first few weeks of Baruch, I was unsure of what club or student organization I wanted to be a part of. As the first few weeks went on, I heard my friends  talk about Hillel and why Hillel was the scene of the “chill”. They mentioned all the lunchtime learning initiatives, and how the free food was incredible. The one thing that all my friends kept mentioning but continued to stick to me was that it was a community. I decided that in order to make my Baruch experience even more enjoyable, I needed to be a part of some community and Hillel would be the perfect fit.

When I walked into Hillel, I was shocked by the amount of people that were just there to chill. I saw ten of my friends all sitting together eating some pizza and sandwiches and just talking about there day. I sat down and chilled alongside them, when the president of the Hillel came over to me and introduced all the daily activities that go on throughout the day. Theres lunch and learn with free lunch, Sunday events and guest speakers that come to speak on a regular basis. I signed up and sat in on a lunch and learn that was taking place in the back. Even though the Hillel was a little small and cramped, it still fostered a environment of community. Everyone either knew each other, had mutual friends, or met someone new. Hillel is a really good resource for meeting new people but also being able to hang out with friends that you already know. I also felt really comfortable talking to students from the higher grades and was able to get some much needed advice for the year. Now I know that the Hillel is a place I could come to to utilize helpful resources and to meet up and chill with friends.
