I went to a career workshop called Let’s Get Starr-ted:Week 4 which was led by Adia Tucker. This workshop went over the importance of having professional online profiles and how we should brand ourselves as a professional. At the beginning of the workshop we talked about the resources that are available on campus, such as the faculty and clubs, which can help us with exploring different occupations and majors. Talking to students and professors of a particular major or field and learning about their experiences can help us get a idea of what the job is like. I think this is a helpful resource since I’m still unsure of what to major in, and I am definitely interested in seeking out this resource. She also gave lots of good recommendations on where to go on campus to get help based on specific majors. Next, we talked about our online profiles. A majority of employers screen job applicants through social networks, and depending on what shows up it can determine whether or not people get hired. LinkedIn is a great platform to showcase you as a professional and it’s easy to control what goes on your profile and page unlike other social platforms. It seems liked a clear way to showcase your experiences and skills to a future employer and is also a great networking tool. Another resource she talked about was getting help on writing or improving a resume and cover letter. After attending this workshop I’m interested in creating a LinkedIn account, getting help on writing a better resume, and also talking to people in the field I would like to enter. My overall experience of this career workshop was that it’s very informative and helped me realize what I should focus on doing next. There are many resources offered and available at Baruch that are useful.

FRO blog #2. Metropolitan Museum of Art
I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art a week ago with a few of my friends. I’ve been here many times before but it was always for school trips, so I didn’t remember much of it. This time my experience was much better than what I remembered. The museum had a wide variety of exhibitions and the ones that I visited were the Greek, Egyptian, European, medieval, and modern arts. The ones I spent the most time in was the European sculptures and Greek art section. What amazed me the most about this exhibit was the heavily decorated rooms in the European exhibit that looked like it came right out of a different time period. There was so much detail to take in everywhere I looked, from the furniture to the wallpaper. Greek art was mainly sculptures of people which was also very detailed. Another exhibit that I really liked was Egyptian art. There were caskets and wall paintings on display. One of the main displays was The Temple of Dendur, where visitors where able to enter the actual structure. I’ve seen pictures of this temple so it was nice to see it in real life. By the time I got to the Egyptian art area, I only had about 15 minutes before closing time so I rushed through the rest of the exhibit to see the temple. Next time when I go back I would definitely spend more time in that section because everything seemed interesting from what I saw. The museum was huge and I spent at least an hour in each exhibit because there was so much art to see. Going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art was a lot of fun and I would be interested in going back on my free time and not just for an assignment.
#1 – Student Life
Last Thursday I went to a club meeting for Ascend, which is a business organization for Pan-Asians. I had no intention of joining but one of the leaders, Shile, told us that there was free lunch and convinced my friend and I to go. I haven’t joined any clubs at this point so I figured why not. When I walked into Ascend, I was immediately greeted with friendly club members. Unfortunately they seemed to be all out of food by the time I got there. Since we went in a bit late, the meeting had already ended and everyone was just standing around and chatting. The president, Richard Tang, talked to me and my friend and he gave us a rundown of what the club is and what they do. He gave me the organization’s business card and we gathered to take a group picture before everyone was dismissed. By the time I left, I still wasn’t entirely sure of what the club was. I just knew it was some sort of business club and they provide networking opportunities and help develop skills for Asians in the marketing, finance, and business communities.
The people were very welcoming and I would probably go back again, but this time at the beginning of club meetings so I wouldn’t miss everything like I did the first time. I think this will be a great opportunity for me to talk to older students and see what their experience is like in the marketing field since it is something that I might be interested in. Everyone was chill and it seemed like a good place to meet new people and make friends. In general, I enjoyed my time at Ascend, and I hope to get more involved and learn more about what the club has to offer.
