Freshman Seminar Fall 17 EWA

TEAM Baruch

It isn’t a picture with me in it, but it would’ve been weird if I took a selfie with everyone in it

I attended the TEAM Baruch information session on 10/10 and it allowed me to see another side of Baruch. TEAM Baruch includes Freshman Seminar Peer Mentors, Orientation Leaders, PAWS, or Peers Advocating Wellness Center, Peers for Careers, Success Network Peer Mentors, and Transfer Seminar Peer Mentors. During the information meeting, there were members of TEAM Baruch that were currently involved or had been involved in all the mentioned sections of TEAM Baruch. They explained that there was a vigorous training process (that you have to pay for which is wack) and a retreat at the end of the training to build stronger ties with the other members, which they had said gave them a sense of family. This is all only if you make it through the application process, the interview, and the cut from 100 to around 55. Everyone speaking said how they didn’t plan on going through with the whole thing, but once they did, they didn’t regret it because they were so much more involved, and they just genuinely enjoyed it. This could assist me during my first seminar at Baruch not much I guess cause all the good outcomes come after the first semester, but it could give me a goal to pursue during this semester. Personally, I don’t know if I’m going to go through with it, mostly because it seems like you need a real sense of dedication for it, something I don’t think I have at the moment. If I’m going to join a club or group or anything, I’m going to want to put my one hundred percent into it, and if I can’t, it’ll be a waste of not only my time, but TEAM Baruch’s time. Overall though TEAM Baruch seems like a good opportunity for anyone who’s interested in becoming anything I mentioned, plus you get payed decently I hear.

School of Visual Arts Gallery

First walking into the gallery, I didn’t expect much for school artworks coming into the gallery. However once we walked into one of the main rooms with all of the main artworks, i began to see this consistency in the definition of destruction and catastrophe. I saw others passing by without taking a moment to consider the art, however I stood there and looked at the magnificent work of abstract art and photography which doesn’t make sense to most people. While looking at the art, I saw work that puts images that are absurd on their own, yet, when put together it creates a work of understood art. I saw the perspective behind the students who made such works, and understood that there is more to it than it seems. The gallery was small, but had a great impact on my friends and I as we saw meaningful art, that seems minute. Though, it may seem insignificant, we were able to concur that there is more to the art than it seems, and we learned not to judge art by its cover. Overall the experience was pleasant as it was a smaller gallery, and allowed us to take in each and every art work without being bored or in a rush of any sort. Art is a great way to express ideas, and is a fun way to enjoy your time while learning.

Museum of Modern Art

Over the weekend I took the time to go to the Museum of Modern Art with a few friends! By far, my two favorite pieces were Dan Flavin’s “untitled (to the innovator of Wheeling Peachblow)” and Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.” I love the colors and light both artworks give off.  They provide a sense of tranquility (something that I could certainly use on a day off) and imagination.  I would definitely go back, especially because it’s free for students!

Morgan Library & Museum with High School Friends!

Last week, my friends from high school came back from college and we decided to go to the Morgan Library and Museum. The Morgan Library and Museum was filled with many fine arts paintings and it was impossible to keep my eyes off of them. I found this painting in particular interesting because of the contrasting images seen in one image. The expressionless dog seems either oblivious of the dead rabbit and hawk or protective of the dead game. When I first saw this painting I didn’t notice that there were two dead animals because I was so focused on the dog. But as I looked closer I realized that there was a story that was waiting to be told.

The idea that there was a story waiting to be told brought me to ask my friend, Lucy, “What do you see?” Lucy, an artist herself, said that to her the dog seemed to be waiting for something bad to happen as if the dog was expecting to be the next one dead. Then I shared my thoughts of the dog either waiting for his or her master or protecting the two animals, Lucy strongly disagreed.

Lucy and I have a tendency to go back and forth when it comes to any issue, but this time it was different. It was as if being in college has allowed us to become more respectful and analyze deeper into a subject. Lucy and I may attend different schools, but college has allowed for both of us to have discussions with people from all over the country and the world, which has definitely begun to change the way we think and the way we speak.

The Visual Arts Center

On Friday, October 6th I attend the Visual Arts Center of the Visual School of Arts. The center had a small gallery with many interesting images. Some were artistic drawing and paints but, the ones I found interesting were the old fashion photographs. The one of the ones that was especially memorable to the one of building in ruins and you can see the city in ruins in the background. The other image that really stood out was the photograph that showed a religions statue that was toppled and the head is knocked off(which is basically every statue were observe in art history class). Those images showed me how powerful a single picture can be and how much it can show. Also, this visit also allowed me to practice some of the skills that I learned in art history class, on how to analyse images.

A Visit to the Visual Arts Center

A couple friends and I decided to visit the School of Visual Arts not too far away from Baruch after our classes on Thursday. Finding it was a bit difficult but once we did we discovered that the school had an art exhibit in it with many art works as well as little descriptions on the sides. The art works were quite confusing to me because I wasn’t sure what was going on in them up until I read the description on the side which spoke of Shikumen which I had never heard of. “Shikumen came from the migration after the Small Swords Rebellion and the Taiping Revolution of 1853.” (Citing from one of the captions/descriptions for the artwork) It was a place that developed after rebellions and a war like state that started off very poor and then developed its own rich culture and built up from it. This place plays a very important role in Chinese history because of its background, development and new culture. Although all the art works presented seemed very chaotic, they did show a sort of beauty in the chaos that was going on and the war like state. The anarchy portrayed represents the freedom that those people were striving for and had finally reached when they formed Shikumen. I’m very glad I got to visit this Visual Arts center and view all of the Shikumen art as well as other pieces that had no relation to Shikumen but were very interesting, aesthetically pleasing and captivating to me. I think visiting this center was also very helpful considering I take art history and we are taught all about reading and analyzing art which I got to take into real life and try and utilize during this exhibit.

“Networking with EY”

networking with ey

On Monday September 11th, I went to a meeting where EY professionals gave us insight to how things work at EY and answered questions. At first, I was hesitant in going to the meeting for two reasons: 1. You had to dress business casual and I decided to wear sweats and sneakers; 2. I had no idea what this was for. However, I sucked it up and entered the room after standing outside for several minutes. I immediately felt out of place being surrounded by people who were wearing ties and blouses.

When the panel of EY professionals started describing what they do and how EY is a great organization, I noticed how they spoke almost completely of accounting, finances, and similar topics. However, since I am interested in marketing, I wasn't sure if anything being said would be useful. I was wrong. I learned so much from the panelists and the experiences they shared with the group made me want to major in accounting and join EY. One thing that stuck with me was what John said about saying yes to things. Second chances don't come by often, so take advantage of the opportunities that come your way instead of turning them down.

When all the questions were answered and the EY professionals said everything they wanted to say, we were left to get food and talk to others. I began talking to upperclassmen who answered my questions on if AKDP had people in marketing, since all I've been hearing since I entered the room was anything but that. I learned that there's a good handful of people who major in marketing and that the two main people I should talk to are abroad in South Korea and China (?). However, I was directed to someone who is in marketing (sorry, I forgot her name) and asked her some questions. I spoke with a few others and finally left the meeting.

If I'm being completely honest, I only attended this event because of Freshman Seminar, but I am so grateful for it. I would never have thought to attend something like this, since I am not comfortable in social situations (especially the networking factor). Now, I am a bit more open to going to events similar to this, and I even went to a MOB (Marketers of Baruch) GIM the day after. I can see myself going to meetings more often in the future because of this FRO assignment.

Muslim Business Association

The MBA was a very welcoming. We sat in the room getting introduced to what they did in the club. They told us the club had a religious and business part, which is really motivating to me. The club happens twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In the club, we did icebreakers which we each introduced ourselves. We also were served food and had to fill a sign in sheet. They were very organized they introduced important information in the PowerPoint and handed out flyers. Overall, I had a nice time meeting new people and hopefully I’ll have time to come here next time.

Bagatelle

So last week I went to Bagatelle for my friends birthday. His dad told him to be responsible with the credit card, so naturally a good time was ahead. We started off with a light breakfast, pancakes and waffles and some pasta and truffle pizza flooded the table. Once the “brunch” was eaten shit got real. We started off our services with 6 Bottles of Dom Perignon illuminated. My friend dylan and I headed down to the freezer room with Tellio, the manager, and selected a nice bottle for the next champagne show. Our choice was a Ace of Spades Gold Brut. Very good choice indeed. The champagne drunk is one with zero discomfort and ultra fun. Next my other friend, Nikan, put in an order for Don Julio Blanco Shots. about 20 shots came to the table, attracting slutty gold diggers. My friend josh liked this very much. Long story short it was a good day.

United Chinese Language Association (UCLA)

At first going there just to accomplish my Freshman Seminar homework, I was pleasantly surprised how much fun I actually had. Of course being a Freshman, I was really nervous joining this club because of all the unfamiliar faces there. Luckily I went with another friend, Tony Tan from my FRO class so things weren’t too scary. Getting there though, I felt very much welcomed because everyone was so helpful and friendly to one another. This past meeting, we all collectively learned about the traditions Chinese people do during the Mid- Autumn Festival (中秋節), which was funny to me because I myself don;t even do a lot of these “traditions” besides eating the Mooncake with my entire family under the full moon. Sadly, this was all I did that day because I had family business to attend to, but from what I heard from Tony, they also made lanterns and had a prize drawing at the end. I am very happy to be a part of UCLA Club because it sounds like the badass college and because I really had a great time. (In fact

(In fact, I had so much fun that I totally forgot to take a selfie there so I hope a flyer would suffice Myra
