Freshman Seminar Fall 17 EWB

SCDC (Career)

The Starr Career Development Center is probably the single most useful resource Baruch possesses. That place is extremely helpful with everything you can thing about. Their main concern is your future, which I appreciate very much because most of the time, my brain is trying to contemplate how my future is going to turn out. The staff there were very nice and thorough with the job they did, showing genuine care. I walked in to get my resume looked over. Going into it I thought my resume was near perfection but sitting down with my advisor, I understood from an employers point of view how my resume lacked in many ways. I plan on making many more visits to this center because the diversity of things they can help with is almost overwhelming. I didn’t even know we could need that much help for some of the things. I’m very grateful for this center. My main goals are to focus on schoolwork and start shaping my career. There wrare so many things that need to get done in terms of the world of my career. Internships, volunteer work, and all the workshops I need to go to in order to ensure myself the best chance. New York City is very competitive. Baruch is very competitive. It’s my duty to use the resources around me to the very best potential so I can place myself in a better position to succeed.

MET (Academic)

The museum gave me an opportunity to complete an extra credit assignment for my History class. The vast amount of history inside the museum was astonishing. It’s interesting to thing that a single picture or statue completely embodies another time period. The museum served as a learning experience as well because the panels displayed along with the art were very informative. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore such an amazing place. One of the things I found was a piece of propaganda. It’s interesting to see the parallel of what propaganda was back then and how advertising, basically our generations “propaganda”, is now. It’s so positive to have a place to enrich in American and world history in the heart of the city, for people who visit to delve into. I enjoyed myself more than I expected and could really stare at those pictures all day. Each one had its own swag. I won’t take for granted all of the attractions our city has to offer for learning.

Hip Hop 201 (Student Life)

I attended a meeting for the Hip Hop 201 club. It was pretty enlightening to see how relaxed and open everyone was. We basically discussed music the whole time and I asked them some questions a freshman would ask. Most of them had a super crazy love for Travis Scott which was awkward because it seemed like all of them liked Travis Scott and were fighting over who likes him more for the majority of the time. It was a great time for me to just unwind and not worry about any tensions of school while I was in school. That’s pretty marvelous to be able to calm your mind and be around other students and not have to think or worry about school or education. They were all very passionate about music and made music themselves which was awesome. I forgot to mention that music was playing the entire time. We also reviewed new music and albums and had what you would call a listening session. We bounced ideas off each other and talked about which artists were coming up in the industry and what the industry is shaping into becoming. I was surprised to see how versatile everyones musical choices were once we finished our 30 minute conversation about Travis Scott. I mean Scott is pretty great but there are a lot of artists out there with originality that are worthy of recognition. We also spoke about upcoming concerts and which event we’d spend our hard earned cash on, or in some our cases, our parent’s cash. This event eased me into feeling comfortable around this new student environment and I felt like a normal student again. The students at the club were all very kind and really just made me feel welcomed. They accepted me and all my opinions and we were able to have good discussions.
