Starr Career Post

This past Thursday I attended Starr’s LinkedIn event. Here they taught us how to create the best type of online profile to appeal to the career and motive of your choice. Although I already have a pretty strong LinkedIn profile, I thought it would helpful anyways. The first thing we did was look at different types of profiles. We looked at profiles that weren’t necessarily good or bad, but different in their intent. For example, some people had every category of their profile filled out, but some people didn’t because those areas of the profile didn’t pertain to their intentions. The purpose for my LinkedIn account isn’t necessarily for the purpose of growing my network, but rather to re-establish it. The people I have connected with on my LinkedIn include past employers, alumni, and companies that I have worked with. I hope that people I have on my LinkedIn will see my profile and remember my accomplishments for any future hiring opportunities or for referrals to others in the future. I have a strong network of people from Buffalo, people from my Vietnamese Catalyst Foundation, and some in the dance field. I definitely have to remember to keep my LinkedIn updated when certain interests and intentions for its use change.

Enrichment: Student Life

I have joined the Spoon Baruch Chapter publications. I was interested in Spoon back in the summer, and it was the first organization at Baruch that I applied to. Later in the summer, I got accepted as the team’s social marketer. Once you are accepted into Spoon Baruch, you need to complete the online skills that apply to your role. The picture below shows all my completed marketer skills I had to complete in order to start working with Spoon. This took me a lot of time, but luckily I was traveling a lot this summer, so I had time on the road to spare completing my skills. Baruch’s head of Spoon is Hannah Sarraf. She oversees that everyone is completing their tasks through a site called Slack – Secret Sauce. My social marketing team manager is Vicki Riley. She assigned me the role of being the team’s Instagram lead. My job is to post on the Spoon Baruch Instagram page 3x a day, as well as oversee follower interaction and post engagement. At this time, Spoon Baruch has about 900 followers on Instagram, and we are trying to boost that up to 1,000 by the end of the month!

My favorite subject at school is English. I am very interested in journalism and I even held a summer internship last summer with Buffalo Rising. Buffalo Rising is an online newspaper, and I was responsible for reaching out to developers, interviewing them and touring their buildings, and writing an article on it. For a while, I also was co-head of my school’s newspaper, Nichols News. Although I wasn’t able to keep up with it because of other commitments, the ability to write has always been a talent of mine. I’m glad I joined Baruch because while my major is CIS and Business, I’m glad I also have an outlet that allows for my creativity and use of writing.

Introductory Post

Hi my name is Pearl. I plan to be a CIS Data & Analytics major and Journalism minor. One thing you don’t know about me is I began dancing in a professional company at the age of 2!!!!

I appreciated that The Book of Unknown Americans made an effort to tell not just one person’s story, but had a multitude of different characters. What I didn’t like about the book was the ending. That was so sad!  And then it just ended with nothing resolved, and no moral lesson to take away from Arturo’s death.

Immersion – Career

I am planning on rushing second semester for Beta Alpha Psi. I am required to attend one GIM and two events. I attended the First GIM, KPMG career fair advice day, and Ice Breakers. For those of you who aren’t familiar with BAP, it is a co-ed business honors fraternity. There are multiple business fraternities at Baruch, but BAP is known to be the most established and prestigious of all the others.

On the first day, rushes were introduced to members of BAP as well as given a powerpoint and video presentation about the fraternity. BAP is not easy to get into it seems. While there isn’t a cap-off number of rushes allowed, you must have a 3.5 GPA or higher, and you will be interviewed if your credentials meet BAP standard through your online application.

The second meeting I attended was BAP’s KPMG event. Company workers in accounting, finance, and CIS from KPMG came to give us advice on how to make a good first impression when attending a career fair. We were also able to speak in groups with individual members and ask them any questions we had about internships and how to kick-off your career.

The final meeting I attended was the Ice Breaker event. Rushes came to play some games in order to get to know one another a little bit better. One of the games was Q and A. According to what color skittle you chose from the bag, you would have to answer the question assigned to that color. Everyone with a pink skittle, for example, would need to answer, “if you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?” Everyone with a pink skittle would have to stand up, and those people would go around the room, telling everyone their dream destination. However, when my color stood up to answer our question, I somehow got skipped over while going around the room, so that was a bit awkward.
