Blog Post #2 Justin Yu (Academic)

To start off this blog, I totally forgot about going to SACC during the week, so I could write my blog about my experience. I spent the whole Columbus Day weekend at home,  writing papers for my other classes. I realized this morning, that this blog was due at 12:50. Being the genius that I am, I decided to go to the Writing Center the morning of today (kill 2 birds with 1 stone). I had to go over my proposal paper for History 1000. I needed to write 2 pages on what I was going to write my paper about, which is totally ridiculous. I only had a long paragraph on Ann Hutchinson.

I went into the Writing Center for the first time, and I was a bit nervous. I went to the receptionist and asked if I could have my paper peer reviewed. I was expecting an answer along the lines of, “Yeah of course!” Instead, I got, “No sorry, the peer review sessions are only on Mondays, 1-2pm and Wednesdays, 4-5pm.” I was at a loss of words because I was so flustered and it made the situation a bit awkward (okay, super awkward). The receptionist said I could give in my paper for written feedback. I chose not to do that since I didn’t have much time until it was due. I later realized all this information was on the white board, while uploading the picture on my blog.

Nonetheless, I thanked the receptionist and I left in a hurry out of embarrassment. I was actually amazed at the resources given to the students at Baruch. I thought the only thing the Writing Center had was 1 on 1 peer review. I learned that there’s so much more than just that. They have writing workshops, consultations, peer review, walk-ins, and written feedback. I really want to get used to taking advantage of using these things for better writing and for learning about how I can get better at writing.
