Blog Post #3 Diana Derylo (Career)

This past Thursday I decided to go to the Starr Career Development Center to get my resume reviewed. Going into this review session I was confident in my resume and I didn’t think that it needed much changing. I was wrong. I walked out with marks all over my paper. Although my resume wasn’t as good as I thought, I learned a lot and it was very helpful. The staff member that helped me was Francisco. Francisco started off by telling me that my resume should be one page and the font size should be between 1o and 12. Then my name should be centered in the middle and in bold. Under my name goes my address, telephone number, and email. The first section on my resume was education. Under this I included the school that I currently attend and my intended major. One thing that Francisco recommended that I do is spell out the type of degree that I will be getting. For example, instead of writing B.B.A., I now have to write Bachelor of Business Administration. He said that this makes my resume look more professional, I don’t know why, but I just agreed.

The next sections that I included in my resume were work experience and community service. In this part Francisco told me to expand and describe everything that I did. For instance, he told me to use action works while explaining my previous job. Also, for the community service section I was told that under every service I did, I have to write a brief explanation of what I did and what the service was for. To finish off my resume I had a skills section which he said was fine, but he also told me to add a interest section because some companies that you will try to work will want to know a little more about you. I found this workshop to be very helpful and I will definitely be going back once I add more to my resume.
