Blog Post #3 – Marko Grgic (Career)

Last Thursday, I decided to check out the Starr Career Development Center to get some help writing and revising my resume. I went during walk-in hours (5:00-6:00PM) and, after waiting a short while, met with Sen. Sen was very friendly and gave me a ton of pointers, tips, and things to think about when writing or revising my resume.

He started out by explaining that, even though I was a freshman with no current GPA and an undecided major, I should still have Baruch listed under “Education” because employers will see that I go to a very reputable college, which will hopefully make me stand out.

Sen then gave me a couple of formatting tips to make my resume flow and look better. For example, I had the “Education” section all the way at the bottom because I figured employers cared about work experience and personal highlights more; I created a priority list. Sen told me to put “Education” all the way at the top not only because I was still a student, but also because it gave employers a chance to see what college I am going to, what I have accomplished in high school, and the general path I am taking in terms of education.

Sen also told me that, when writing about previous work experience, I should list things that make me stick out and separate me from everyone else. He told me that, while employers do want to see what type of relevant work experience you have, they also want to know what separates you from the rest of the people applying.

After discussing ways to best revise my resume, Sen gave me a little booklet that showed sample resumes and cover letters that I could use as a template. I thanked him, got his signature, and left.

I’m glad Baruch gives us opportunities to work on our resume as well as help us with anything career related, thanks to the SCDC.
