Today, I went to the NYMIA general meeting in room 6-175 for anyone that is interested. NYMIA is a club for students that are interested in music and/or the music industry. I waited about about 30 minutes with some of the board members for our room door to be opened. These were 30 minutes of silent eating. I had no idea who these people were, what this club was about, or when I was going to take a picture for this assignment. The meeting started with about 8 people and then grew to more than 20 after about 15 minutes. I was surprised to see that there was a power point presentation prepared to explain what the club was about. I learned that NYMIA was involved in the radio show here at Baruch and that they also held a music festival.
After the presentation, we started to introduce ourselves to one another. I learned that there were many very experienced people. From a student that produced for Justin Bieber, Kanye, and French Montana, to someone that recently got a job at Carnegie Hall. I fell in love with the vibe of the club because everyone was a music lover. I was able to meet some people that played the same instruments as me and some people that played instruments I want to learn. There some students from overseas and I felt respect for them for coming from so far away (Poland, China, Spain) to pursue their career in the music industry. I decided halfway through the introductions that I was going to continue to come to the club meetings. A lot of us agreed that it was hard to make friends at Baruch because of the awkwardness of talking to new people.
I realized that because of the common interest of the club, it was so much easier to connect to new people. I hope to learn about the music industry and how it works as well as having fun while playing instruments with new people.
