SACC Tutoring

A few weeks ago, I attended the SAAC tutoring center at school to help me improve my math skills and hopefully do better on the second midterm. Math was always easy for me in high school, so it came as a shock when I had absolutely no idea what was happening in my current calc class. I struggled to keep up with the fast paced lectures, but always reviewed my notes and home and got 100s on the quizzes. The quizzes, I had learned after the first midterm, were way easier than the actual exam, so I would need a lot of help for the second midterm. My tutor was able to help me with the trickier problems and went over basic questions so that I would be able to do them quickly on the test. I felt more confident going into the second midterm and was even able to get 5 points higher on this midterm. Although it may not seem like a significant amount, I am happy I was able to improve my score, thanks to the SAAC center. I will definitely be going to them more often, since they obviously know what they are talking about and can help students do so much better. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. USG GIM

On Thursday, October 5, I attended the General Interest Meeting for USG. I was always a leader in my everyday life, so I was curious to see how I could take that and relate it to my college experience. I heard about the meeting through a friend who is a senior member of USG.
At the meeting, they discussed how you can be accepted into USG. They have weekly meetings in which they discuss problems in the school, and everyone is welcome to sit in on these meetings if they have anything they would like to bring to USG’s attention. We heard brief speeches from the president, Vice President, and each of the main chairs. They showed us how they all operate together and are able to get Baruch the money we need to host all of our events, and give out so much free stuff (our favorite part of college!).
USG is a great idea for anyone looking to have a say in their college experience. Different chairs are responsible for allocating money to clubs and teams and anything else that needs to be paid for. They must all work as a team to reach their goal. To demonstrate this to us, they split us into teams and we had to build the tallest tower using spaghetti and a marshmallow. The highest tower could only be built through communication and teamwork, the most important qualities one can have to get into USG. This GIM really made me interested in joining.

ALPFA Workshop

This Thursday, I attended an ALPFA Workshop. This was one of their many workshops that dealt with career development and success for the future. When we first arrived, we were greeted by smiling faces, and of course, the star of the show- pizza. During this first workshop, after everyone had eaten, we discussed the basics in writing a resume and how to use the skills we learned to make our resume look better and make it more effective and beneficial. A well written resume goes a really long way and is the first step in starting your career. As someone who has only written a resume to pass a class in high school, I was able to learn a lot from this workshop. It taught me what needed to be present on the resume to help me stand out in a large stack of them. At this workshop, the mentors also discussed basic leadership skills and how we can become better leaders, not only in Baruch, but in everyday life as well. They discussed the importance of networking and how we can use people that we know and meet to get ahead in life. I really enjoyed attending this workshop and I will most likely be attending future workshops done by ALPFA so that I can hopefully build my resume and acquire social skills that will prepare me for the years beyond college. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank.
