What I have learned concerning my use of time

What I learned about my use of time is that I spend the majority of it on things that won’t benefit me in the long run. I need to cut back on social media and texting because these are things that I am on throughout the entire day. I spent the next most amount of time on quadrant I. This is a good sign because it tells me that at least I’m not throwing away all my time. Although I spend most of my time in quadrant IV, I believe that I will still be able to achieve my goals and dreams. I’m still focused on what’s important and things such as social media won’t throw me of course.

  • Write each action from your list in Step 1 in the appropriate quadrant on your chart.
  • Write about what you have learned or relearned concerning your use of time.

What I relearned about my use of time is that I spend time that I am free doing things that are not important. I work late in the afternoons which leads to me waking up extremely late. In waking up late, I lost a few hours that I could have used to do homework. Instead of doing homework, I just go on my social media accounts, read or I am usually running errands or doing something for my mother. In doing this I learned that I always stop what I am about to do or am currently doing for my mother because she always needs my help for helping. I also relearned that I leave my assignments for the last minute which is not healthy since it leaves me stressing and rushing to complete the assignment and turning it in on time.

Several actions that I have taken in the past two days are:

  • I did my homework
  • Studied for midterms
  • Watched You tube videos

  • I went to a shoe store
  • I helped my brother with his homework
  • Changed the clocks in my house
  • I Did my laundry
  • I slept
  • I cleaned my room
  • I bought tickets to a concert
  • I went to visit my aunt
  • I was active on social media

B+C) *Quadrant I (Important and urgent)- I studied for midterms (2 hrs), did my homework (2 hrs), sleeping (8 hours), showering (30 mins), doing my laundry (2 hrs), changing clocks in my house (5 min)

*Quadrant II (Important and not urgent)- Working on Homework (essays) that are due in further weeks (1hr), cleaning my room (90 mins), eating (35 mins), going to the bank (30 mins), helping brother with Homework (20 min), visiting my aunt (4 hrs)

*Quadrant IV (Not important and not urgent)- Watching YouTube Video’s several times a day during Homework breaks, going to the shoe store (1 hr), buying tickets to a concert (5 min)

  1. D) After looking back and reflecting on the decisions I made on how I spent my time these past two days, I realize that for the most part I in fact do try my best to get things done. Of course, I also made myself become aware that there are still many things I can do to improve my time management skills. I understand that by removing many of the things I did, especially items belonging to Quadrant III & IV, I would be making it easier for myself by creating more time+ opportunity in getting my school work done. For the most part, I believe that I did an okay job in balancing out the Urgent/non-urgent things . However, I still want to improve, since  I am always feeling like I don’t have enough time to do everything I want to get done. From here on, I will try to be more self conscious of how I spend my time, especially when having important assignments due. I am sure that this will result in great improvements regarding my work ethics.

  1. After analyzing my time I realized that I balance the urgent and important with the not urgent and not important. The activities in Quadrant 2 only apply for this week due to midterms. Therefore, I spend most of my time in Quadrants 1 & 4. The fact that the hours of quadrant 1 and 4 could add up to a whole day potentially makes me realize that these are the 2 Quadrants I take the time to consider throughout the day. If I continue to use my time this way, I feel I could reach my goals and dreams. I never want to be consumed by work and school to the point where I lose out on my fun of what life could bring me. In fact, I don’t feel it is the right time to take purposeful actions such as towards my career at this point. I have to feel I can manage my time with school and jump starting internships and jobs towards my career and even clubs before I can take purposeful actions. But, at the time I am at now I feel the best thing to do would be to focus on how much time I would need to have to greatly apply effort in school and then broaden myself with the opportunities Baruch has to offer.

A) 15 actions that I have taken in the past two days are:
1) Went out to the parade
2) Hang out with friends
3) Went to a restaurant
4) Started talking to an old friend
5) I cleaned my house
6) I changed the clocks in my house
7) I did homework

9) I ate
10) I checked my social media
11) I went to a party
12) I showered
13) I made breakfast
14) I made some errands for my mother\
15) I took out the garbage

B+C) Quadrant I (Important and urgent)- I studied (2 hrs), did homework (2 hrs), sleeping (8 hours), showering (30 mins), running errands for my mother (15 mins),
Quadrant II (Important and not urgent)- Doing homework that’s due in a week (1hr), cleaned my house (45 mins), eating (30-45 mins), making breakfast (20 mins), took out the garbage (less than 5 mins)
Quadrant III (Not important and urgent)- Checking my social media every hour, went to the parade (2 hrs), went to party (4 hrs),
Quadrant IV (Not important and not urgent)- Watching T.V for hours (3 hrs), went to a restaurant (2hrs), talked to an old friend (hours after hours),

D) After analyzing my time, I discovered that I can do more important things than waist my time on not so necessary things such as hanging out with friends as much and on the phone. I spend more time on important and not urgent (quadrant II) and important and urgent (quadrant I). Some specific evidence that I used to draw this conclusion is the amount of things and hours that is spent in that specific quadrant. I need to reevaluate where I spend more of my time then once I do, I do believe I will reach my goal. I would friends and distractions keep me away from taking purposeful actions. I feel that my discoveries will help me throughout my year, knowing which quadrant I need to work will help me in the long run.
